Why both, may I ask? Ultimak for the optic and the TWS for the rear peep?

Offset light mount? You can mount it in front of the optic no problem.

I think you misunderstood.

I was saying that you'd want the ultimak for the ability to mount an offset light on it, even if you have the Dogleg rail.

I suppose but we're talking about a really expensive light mount....

$100 Ultimak + $60 offset Vltor mount (assuming you don't use a QD one, then it's $80)

Agreed. That's why poor kids like me would probably just use two or three metal ties...

I've been tempted to get one of those rail dust covers but like others have heard about the zero retention deal. Seen similar systems where a rail sits directly on top of the dust cover, latched onto the rear end via the recoil spring like this:

Not sure who makes this or how much it is, however ChaosUS.com makes a full rail system for $220. One's called TITAN, the other NEMESIS. Virtually identical. Good luck getting an order through if you decide to get one, I think it's just the one guy taking orders from every gun community but I'm just guessing as always.

TWS ≠ a rail just stuck on a handguard. But like I already mentioned, I'd like to see some real testing with it.

Cameron makes good stuff. However, it's for the Saiga-12 only.

That's the TWS Gen 1 in the top pic. I've got one on one of my AKs and I like it - pretty flawless zero retention. FYI the gen I uses the rear stock mounting bolt to secure it and actually has a slight gap between it and the dustcover. All in all a good system - my only bitch about it was the rear sight aperature was too big for my eye. The Chaos - now that's a product I am watching. Cameron has stated they will make them for the Romy and Yugos in the future as well as the rest of the Saiga line.

Yes, and so I can run a magnified optic when ever I feel like it. Since it weighs the same as the oem cover, I figure there's no reason not to.

I mainly plan on using the micro on the Ultimak though. Just giving myself options. The minute the gun arrives, I'll be sending off the SBR form and getting it engraved.

Exactly what kind of magnified optics do you plan putting on a 12" 7.62x39 barrel?

IF I use anything, it would be nothing stronger than a 1-4x variable like the NXS or TR-24. I don't currently own either of these, but do plan to in the future. It's going to be a fun gun more than anything.

Just IMO, but to me an Aimpoint Micro makes a hell of a lot more sense on an SBR AK than a magnified optic. In fact, a magnified optic makes...well, zero sense. Your gun man, but even if it's a fun gun, it's going to be more fun with an appropriate optic.

Honestly, 4" of barrel make very little FPS difference with 7.62x39. You lose like 150fps or something like that. Still, a magnified optic is a bit much, I agree, but if you were going to bother putting one on an AK in the first place, it's not like putting it on an SBR is significantly more pointless.

Like I said, mainly going to be running the micro on the Ultimak.

I wouldn't mind trying out a magnified optic just for shits and giggles, but it wouldn't be for anything serious.

Magnified optics on a 16" barreled 7.62x39 don't make much sense other than fanboys jerking off over. Even more less so with an SBR.

At the last minute, I removed the TWS from cart and switched it for 15 mags and 450 rounds of brown bear.

Thanks for the advice fellas :D
