What I think is hilarious is that it is longer than my AK. Without a shoulder stock, my Mosin is longer than my AK -with- a shoulder stock, lol.

Looks great James. Have you picked out the length of the barrel, or did I not catch it?

I don't know how long it will end up being. Barrel length is not important, obviously, since I'm not exactly worried about terminal ballistics of the 7.62x54r bullet. I'm just going to shorten it as close as I can to the front clamp you see at the end of the wood, while leaving room for the front site and about 1-1/4" of barrel in front of the sight.

lol maybe later. My hand if fucking numb from holding a file and grinding away at the wood all night. There is no smooth section or handle to the file I'm using so my hand is about numb... like this:

If there's an end you don't often use, you could wrap it in athletic tape or paracord.

If you use both ends, they sell these leather sleeves that are meant for sliding over metal pan handles for when they get hot; I bet one of those might help.

Although, if you're anything like me, you'll just think about those ideas for a second and then go back to rubbing your hand raw every time you use your rasp because, meh, it ain't gonna kill ya.

The front end of that wood looks great. I bet it's pretty funny looking with all that wood gone but the barrel still long. You should take it out and shoot it like that, just for a lark. (I mean, you should do whatever the hell you want, but that's what I'd do.)

I use ever surface on that thing and switch often.

Most of all... that last part is accurate, lol. I could wear gloves, too, but... meh, fuck it. The bleeding will stop... I got a gash on my left index finger from when the rasp slipped when I was filing aggressively to remove material quickly... slipped and raked across my finger. Sawdust helped it clot fast :P

lol yea, it's ridiculous. I can barely hold it up with one hand, on the pistol grip. It should get much better once I remove the end of the barrel (months from now)

I fully plan on taking it to the range and shooting it like this, though. 2-handed though... doubt I will even try one handing it.

Looking good!

So can you cycle the bolt while just hanging onto the pommel grip?

Nah, gotta use the trigger-hand to do that. The bolt will hit your hand if you try to cycle it with your left hand (for right handed shooters)

So you have to hold on with your left hand, to the regular place you would grip it out front... and cycle it with your right hand. With is still easy.

I might have missed it somewhere in the 12 pages this has become, but I am wondering what are your plans to finish the wood at the end.

Got a can of Tung Oil. Not totally sure though. Gonna play it by ear. Not like it isn't something I can't do-over.

Took this photo before I went to bed last night. Should have taken it from the opposite perspective, as the diminishing vanishing point in the direction of the barrel makes it seem shorter than it is

Looking pretty good so far. Wood work is clean.
Are you going to retain both front and rear sights on it?

For a wood finish... I would recommend Tom's 1/3 paste... also called Gunny Paste. A little goes a long way, smells good, and makes the wood preeeeetty.

I don't know. My prior thought was that I'd retain both front and rear. Now I'm curious if I can remove the rear sight because I don't think it looks as good as I expected. I want to keep the front sight, but the rear sight is so bulky. I think a bare barrel up front would just seem so off-kilter though, aesthetically.

I'm going to have to check out some assembly diagrams of the Mosin and see how it's done. I was taking some close looks at the receiver, and I'm afraid that the rear site base appears to be all once piece. At the least, it seems that the collar that holds the upper handguard -is- monolithic with the rear sight base, so if I remove the rear sight, I'll lose that collar, which I don't want to lose. I may be stuck with the rear sight.

Or at the least, Maybe I'd have to grind and file it down to just a cylinder, which would be a GIANT PITA and take a LOT of work :\

Well, judging by the Russian 91/30 exploded view: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/4331.jpg

It is pinned on.

However, I'm unsure if this remained a truth for the Finn rifle, though it is likely.

I'm still worried about the collar, as shown below:
Image

That piece all the way to the left holds the wood down, as the handguard wedges under it, and I believe it is a fixed part of the rear sight base. I'll have to see.

At worst, Maybe I'll just relocate the barrel band (seen below, center) that used to be located at the handguard mid-point, to be used at the very rear, against the receiver, and work it that way...

Unless this guide is merely incomplete, the rear sight base appears monolithic. http://www.surplusrifle.com/finnishmosi ... /index.asp

ETA: Nevermind!

The M28/30 (M39 Similar) rear sight base is a sleeve held in place by a retaining screw under the sight leaf and solder.

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinDisassembly.htm

I just didn't scroll down enough...

I'm gonna see how it looks, since it's removable. I'm not going to decide until it's been SBR'd. Some of my previous thoughts have changed after seeing how it looks in my hands, and I end up going a different direction.

I like the rear sight on it also - but I also would want to keep the front sight (regardless how short it may end up - the shorter the better!). I'd have also changed the grip to more of a plow handle shape and altered the front a bit, but that's how I would have made MY M39 pistol. James can make his anyway he wants too...

One of the coolest projects I've seen so far.
