Dooms wrote:Anything that is going to have the penetration necessary to stop a threat, is going to be able to penetrate interior walls. Be it .410 buckshot or a .44 magnum. I've personally shot a .22 CB short round at an interior wall and it sailed right through the sheet rock and still had plenty of force on the other side to penetrate into a pine board....and .22 short is about as weak as gets, other than a BB gun.

Very simply, if you plan on relying on a firearm to stop a threat, there will be the potential for over-penetration. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a BB gun that you may not be able to rely upon when your life, or the life of your family, depends on it.

This is correct, and for some reason, it seems like only about 10% of people on forums understand this. The box of truth guys showed it, and it makes common fucking sense (people are tougher than drywall) but for some reason, it keeps popping up. You get folk advocating 9mm over 5.56mm, or birdshot over buckshot, for this reason. It's nonsense. Unless you're packing a .50BMG bedside pistol, "over penetration" is merely "adequate penetration."

Let me put it this way, maybe it'll make it more memorable:

Choosing a weaker caliber over a stronger one for home defense, on the grounds that it will reduce the risk of penetrating interior walls, is like wishing for a smaller penis so that you can pleasure hedgehogs as well as humans: if it's big enough to work for the one, it'll tear the living shit out of the other. So enjoy your full-sized penis, don't bother trying to fuck hedgehogs, use whatever defensive caliber you feel will be most effective, know what's behind your target, and try not to miss.

I don't think rifles were one of the options given. If they were, I'd take my AR.

Marlin actually made a .410 version of the Model 336. If I'm not mistaken, it was called the model 410.

It would appear that you are correct:

Definitely the .410

If by "stout stick" you mean "Main Battle Tank" I'll take the stout stick, otherwise I'll go with the .410

So everyone voting for the stick is willing to get shot with a .410, right?

It's not that the .410 lacks in damage, I just don't discount a well made stick. I am sure that a hickory pick axe handle will crush skulls and break bones, and I don't have to reload it. This is of course when taking on Zombies, not armed humans.

Kinda stretching a point out to the edge of logic and then attacking it. Doesn't really make a point at all.
I'd rather not be hit by either, thankyouverymuch.

My .410 has a nice hard walnut stock which - as other posters have mentioned - ought to count as a stout enough stick by any reasonable assessment. So with my .410, I gots both bases covered.

The muzzle velocity is the same for the .410 vs 12ga. The only difference is the amount of shot and size of slugs. The .410 can/is a devastating weapon.
