Now that the contest is over, I present for your evaluation my get home bag. It's not perfect, but its where I am right now. I will point out the shortcomings I see, but I am very interested in hearing your thoughts on this as well.

First, the bag: A Kelty Redwing 3100 ci pack. A very civilian looking, well built pack that carries a heavy load quite well.
Image

Clothes (Not pictured: Sherpa rain shell jacket)
This is definitely a summer weight clothing arrangement. I'll be adding another layer or two for winter.
Image
Image
Pictured: socks, underwear, t shirt, sweatshirt hoodie, and rain poncho

1st Aid Kid and some respirator masks
Image
Pictured: An extended first aid kit from REI, two 3M n95 particulate respirators

Sleep and shelter
Image
Pictured: Big Agnes inflatable sleeping pad, space all weather blanket, multi-purpose tarp, paracord.
Not pictured: four tent stakes

Fire, light, and heat
Image
Pictured: Petzl headlamp, Fenix flashlight, candle lantern and candles, Bic lighter, storm matches, Coleman LED mini lantern, Centrum container full of cotton balls soaked in Vaseline
Not pictured: Swedish fire steel

Personal Hygene
Image
Pictured: Deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, toilet paper, wash cloth, miscellaneous over the counter drugs in the Centrum container

Water and Stove
Image
Pictured: MSR water filter, 2 Nalgene bottles. water purification tablets, Esbit stove and four Esbit tablets

Food:
Image
As you can see, I carry some food. A LOT of food. And why shouldn't I? If I have to use this bag for its intended purpose, something really bad has gone down. I'll be working harder than usual and under a lot of stress. My body is going to need those calories, and a warm meal under these circumstances will be very welcome. Plus, I like food, and make a point of eating some every day.
Pictured: 2 Ready Rice, 5 Knorr (formerly Lipton) pasta side dishes, two tuna pouches, one salmon pouch, 2 Lipton cup o' soups, 5 Cliff bars.

Other stuff:
Image
Pictured: Brunton recharger, Mechanix gloves, Garmin eTrex GPS, pry bar, MSR cookwear, M.95 Puukko Ranger knife, Swiss army knife, duct tape.
Not pictured: Motorola Droid.

A couple of observations:

1. Lots of food, nothing to eat it with. I really need to add some utensils.
2. No extra batteries. I need to add some extra batteries for all of my gadgets.
3. No comms. I'll be adding a 2m HT with general coverage reception here in the next few weeks.
4. The MSR cookware takes up an awful lot of room. I think I'll just add a stainless steel water bottle and use that for cooking and boiling water.
5. No, there are no weapons in this pack. I live in the People's Republic of Maryland where a concealed carry permit might as well be made of unobtainium.
6. I'd like to add some sort of bivy to the sleep and shelter component. I think that would give me a wider range of temperatures
7. There is one glaring omission missing from this bag: cash! I think every GHB should have at least a grand worth of cash stashed away inside of it. I don't have that kind of $$ right now, but need to start saving up so I have this covered.
Pour me another drink and pass the ammunition.

After a lot of thought, I've finally settled on the bag, and for the most part, what to put in it. My intention is for the BOB to sustain me for 3 days or so. Here's what I've got thus far:

CamelBak TriZip, w/100oz bladder
Image

The Stuff I have now
ImageImage

Left Side pocket, holding 100ft of tan 550 cord, and 4 bungie cords
Image

Right side pocket, w/water proof matches and water proof case, eating utensils, AA batteries, three bottles of Iodine pills, and a few silver coins.
Image

Top of bag:
Image

Main compartment. Left side: Light weight snivel gear, Trioxane fuel tablets. Center: 4 stripped MREs, MultiCam BDU pants, 2 pair USGI boot socks. Right: Holy Bible, tan T-shirt, brown T-shirt.
Image

I still need to get:
1-2 more stripped MREs
4-6 power/energy bars
Small map of NC
Gerber or Leatherman multi-tool
Small flashlight (either Surefire or Streamlight)
batteries for flashlight
compass
More water proof batteries
Knife or Machete
Head lamp with red light capability
Weapons cleaning kit, w/oil, bore snake, and rag
Baby wipes
tooth brush and tooth paste
1-quart canteen and canteen cup (in 1 Quart MOLLE pouch attached to outside)
Pocket sized wire saw
Pen and small notebook
Mag pouches for 2 1911 .45 mags, and 4 PMags.
Pouch for all medical items

Anything major I'm forgetting?

This is my BOB. I have bought next to nothing for it, and had most of these things either in my truck or in my "Oh Sh*t" box.

Contents:
three pocket jansport hiking backpack.
basic first aid kit
folding razor knife with replacement blades
Multitool pouch (no multitool)
camp axe, 20' cord in haft
folding shovel
50' 5/16" rope
oversized caribiner
canteen with cup
3' strap
seatbelt, 6'
large fixed blade knife
12' camo cord
50' blaze orange cord
large folding knife
12' tape measure
electrical tape
bar of unscented soap
fishing kit
3 large heavy trashbags
crescent wrench
bag of granola bars and tuna packet (I hate tuna. if it's all i've got, i'll deal)

Machete/chopper and back sheath

On the left side of the right pic is my everyday carry, Shrade Old Timer with pouch, and self-engineered belt consisting of 50' 1/8 polycord, 7' 5/16" black nylon braid, one shackle and one caribiner as buckle.

My next purchase will be a tarp and a multitool, possibly a new more durable pack.

Hey guys. First post - I finally took the leap and joined the forum :) ... the topic of BOB's and get home bags inexorably drew me in. As my info/tagline says, I'm the proud new owner of my own home business - Messina's Front Line Survival Gear. I merely say that as an introduction; not to advertise :)

Anyways, I thought you all might be interested in my daily carry "get home" bag. My day job (sadly, will likely be there for a while) is about 30 miles from home and I live in Harrisburg PA. So my gear is oriented towards getting me home to shelter in place in an emergency as well as deal with cold weather environments.

The primary considerations were twofold: good water storage as well as relatively light weight. The pack comes in at 14.7lbs dry weight with a 2.5l water capacity (not counting additional storage should I choose to carry more). The wet weight is 20.2lbs. I must say some of these packs listed in this thread, while impressive, are far too heavy to be something I'd ever consider feasible. If you intend to be as mobile as possible, then lightening the load is as necessary as having a good supply of water.

Preaching aside, here's the pics

A few updated pics of my BOB, currently residing in my Jeep. Internally it's pretty much done (just missing a few odds and ends), but I'd still like to get a medic pouch, canteen pouch, and another double M4 mag pouch.

I guess I'll be Johnny Come Lately, but this is a great thread and I'd like to contribute.

Bugout Bag:

Image

The bag itself is a Blackhawk! hydration 150 floz 3 day assault pack. Having used both the Army's issued assault pack and various aftermarket bags I think I found a real winner when it comes to this bag. Specifically the built in hydration system, which has it's own zippered pouch and retention straps. The bite apparatus is big and easy to use without needing the operator to bite hard and the water flows quick and easy. It has a huge main storage compartment with a smaller pouch internally which is elasticized to keep Stuff from bouncing around inside. The large outer compartment has interior pockets sized to hold different Stuff (MBTRs, pens/pencils, maps, knives...ect) which makes organisation a breeze. Finally it has a smaller outer compartment for loose Stuff. On the left shoulder strap is my Ontario Tanto Bayonet and sheath.

Image

Image

My IFAK is based on a VooDoo medkit, but with a few added items like basic painkillers, Quikclot, and a small emergency survival kit (rescue whistle, needle and thread, straight razor, waterproof matches) The bulk of the IFAK is pressure dressings, the tourniquet, and ACE bandages. Also included are burn ointments, alcohol swabs, rehydrations salts, iodine tablets and some lip balm.

Image

On the other side of the pack is my shotgun scabbard, also from VooDoo. I've attached via MOLLE a 19 round shotgun shell pouch, and given a full magazine +1 in the shotgun totals 28 rounds, assorted. (I like to keep a good mix of slug, 00 Buck and 4 shot.) The shotgun itself is a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip. I've seen some guys get all crazy with the cheese whiz with their 500's, adding a front hand grip, M1913 rails, external shell holders and the like. I keep mine streamlined. KISS, guys.

Image

Inside the smaller outer compartment I have 150 ft of 550 cord. Usually there are come Cliff bars, Powerbars, and assorted dried fruit and jerky but, uh, I ate it all.

Image

Inside the large outer compartment is A backup folding knife, a Leatherman, a snakebite kit, a small journal and pen, a SureFire helmet light, a few books of moisture resistant matches, and a BIC.

In the largest compartment is a moderate temp. sleeping system, a single-man bivy tent with poles and stakes, a shemagh, a bandanna, Howard Leight Electronic Earmuffs (but what happens when you run out of juice? They still function as stand alone earpro, but having the ability to amp up your ambient noise while the batteries last is a great plus) WileyX hard knuckle gauntlet style gloves, extra T-shirt, socks, and pants. I also have a TAD Gear ranger V5 fleece that I consider a season item. The boots are Merrel Radland Mid Waterproof. Also in the compartment, but not pictured, are extra AA batteries, extra D cells, and a Brando solar charger.

Image

Image

This isn't really a BOB, but gear I would definitely take with me if SHTF is my duty belt/leg rig. This is stuff I use when I'm hiking and when i'm on the range, and I keep it close always.

Image

The belt is a BlackHawk! padded patrol belt with MOLLE straps. Two VooDoo hardcase pistol magazine pouches are on the right rear of the belt. On the left front is a VooDoo dump pouch. On the left I've got a VooDoo utility drop leg panel. I've been more than happy with this panel since I started using it. Inside the main pocket is a pair of Bushnell binos. In the various other pockets/pouches there is a Etrek GPS, a Gerber multi-tool, a Petzle Tactikka headlamp, a survival mirror, a Gerber Fast Draw Fine Edge knive, extra Surefire batteries, an SOG Trident knife, and a Cold Steel True Flight throwing knife. The rifle is an FN SCAR-L, with and EOTech and 3x magnifier, with a Surefire light on the side and adjustable front grip. Not pictured are seven Magpul E-mags. Also included are a set of ESS Sawfly ballistic sunglasses with clear inserts (not shown). The hat is a BlackHawk! Operator's hat with American flag patch. On the other side is a BlackHawk! drop leg modular holster, adjusted to fit my XDm .40 S&W with Insight flashlight/laser attachment. Although normally kept in my pack, I included that Taurus Judge Public Defender 2.5" in this photo for ease of use.

Image

Alright, guys. That's my GTFOD gear. I've spent the majority of the evening looking through all of yours and I've got a lot of ideas on how to improve, make more efficient my gear, so hopefully I'll need to update this post.

No picture, but I have an Eberlestock GunSlinger II. Neat pack since you can carry a full sized rifle with you. Not an inexpensive pack, but worth it when you consider you don't need to buy a drag bag and a pack.

Seeing as a mouse got in the pack and ... well made a mess and I had to take everything out and clean it figured I take pic's and make my post. Well here goes

BOB - Light Fighter R.A.I.D. pack. Right now it's missing a waist belt, need to correct that.
Pouch holds a rated carabiner and 50 feet of para cord. Lose end tied to drag handle.
Image

GI Poncho and tent stakes in left side pocket.
Wind/Rain coat and dry bag with hat glove liners and sock liners in right side pocket.
IFAK on bottom left and GI canteen on bottom right.
Image

Thermometer and compass, IFAK, Wind/Rain jacket, GI canteen kit.
12 hour candel, fire kit, Filter straw, Pelican light cylum, boo boo kit.
Image

Thermals, wool socks, knife sharpener, para cord.
Image

Food, TP, Gloves, hat, reading material.
Image

Food (need to be changed out I randomly grabbed 4 of the same thing  ), GI poncho and 4 tent stakes,
Image

Cheap knife, fero rod, markers, contractor trash bag, snare wire, sewing kit and hand warmer.
Image

Not shown as it's still being cleaned, camel back, GI spoon and Light my fire spork.
and the poncho liner is what everything is sitting on.

single shoulder bag lotsa compartments, will probably replace with military rucksack which is lighter.
camo bags sewn from wornout BDU pant legs, poncho in one, liner in the other. BDU hat, shirt, and field jacket, (not shown Northface brown goosedown jacket as a liner).
CRKT Tanto, coleman camp axe, gerber MkII .
Leatherman Surge, Mossberg 500 JIC, Voodoo Sheath,Buck 110, Kershaw 2445ST.
Water bottle carrier with Aquamira bottle, and fire starter, 25 year old AR15A2, Bersa
Mini Firestorm .45acp 3 mags shoulder holster.
Holster-3mags for Para Ordnance 1911 GI Expert, Holster-4 HKS spd loaders S&W 686-4 .357.
2 mini mag-lites, surplus webgear-3 Ammo,2 canteens w/ cups, AA battery charger,
This is actually more of a patrol setup as I am in as good a spot as can be had for anything except nukes as I can walk to the nearest AFB, and the County Hospital is 3 miles away.

Image This is what my wife would take if on the run, Woodland camo pack, Binoculars,Winchester 1300 carry's 8 shells never fails to work. Yugo SKS no magazines to break or loose, uses stripper clips 10 rds x 20 clips of 7.62x39. Ruger MkII, Colt Gov't .380. and a Yugo M57, use my second webgear set put the grab pouches on it for the 12 guage 30 each of 00 and rifled slugs, and 600 of Winchester Wildcats .22s, and 140 of Tokarev ammo, under clothes, socks and dried food in the main bag, first aid stuff in one of the side pouches. poncho and liner from above post make a good spring to fall sleeping set, need to get a shelter half or heavy weight drop cloth for underneath. snare wire and pistol crossbow for small game if silence is required.
