It's artificial. I've been subbed to Canterbury You tube for a long while, and it's artificial tension.

I'm sure some of the shit is staged. When we were around a campfire during the course I took, Cody asked us for feedback about what we wanted in a survival t.v. show. (he had tried one previously that flopped) He told us that in his older show, they were eating breakfast at a restaurant out in the sticks and a guy came in saying he hit a deer. So the t.v. crew went out there, they dragged the deer into the forest and staged it, like Cody had "found" a dead deer. He then proceeded to show how to clean it and what not.

He said they have to do stuff like that to have enough crap to show on the t.v. show. Remember, it is T.V. and it does have to be entertaining. It's probably days or a week of stuff packed into a 1/2 hour. Or they plan routes they wouldn't go naturally just to show how to navigate said obstacles. I think Bear got a lot better about being open about that kind of stuff after he got called out all over the net.

However, this show seems to have a more natural feel to it. I do think they both are told to "clash" a bit more than they normally would.
I took the consolation prize in Ranter's free CFP-90 thread. He sent me a pack he wouldn't sell (it was a little dusty) for shipping only. Great guy!

The iguana part was great. I loved Cody's reactions. You could really tell he's a foraging and fishing kinda guy as opposed to a hunting and trapping guy like Dave. Their skills complement each other well. That's another reason why they make such a great team.

DISCOVERY'S 'DUAL SURVIVAL' RANKS AS #1 CABLE PROGRAM IN PRIME TIME AMONG MEN FRIDAY NIGHT

The ratings propelled Discovery Channel to rank as the #1 cable network in delivery during Prime among M18-49 and #2 among M25-54/M18-34 on Friday, June 25.

The 10PM premiere telecast of DUAL SURVIVAL surpassed many primetime broadcast telecasts on 6/25/10, bringing in more viewers in key male demos than ABC (Wife Swap for M18-49), CBS (Medium for M25-54, M18-49), FOX (Bones for M18-49, House for M18-49) and NBC (Dateline for M18-49).

DUAL SURVIVAL is an all-new 10-part series following two survival experts, military-trained Dave Canterbury and naturalist Cody Lundin, as they take on some of the planet's most unforgiving terrain to demonstrate how the right skills and some creative thinking can keep you alive.

In the episode Out of Air, Canterbury and Lundin were lost SCUBA divers who were fortunate enough to find air, but were deep inside the maze of caves in Belize. Together, equipped with only their dive gear, they had to find their way out of the caves, through the dense jungle and to safety.

In this week's episode, airing Friday, July 2 at 10PM e/p, Canterbury and Lundin head into Peru's infamous 'Valley of the Volcanoes' to take on the ultimate lost-in-the-desert survival scenario - a broken down car, miles from civilization, in the middle of a lava-scorched land with few vital survival resources.

Thought I'd add my 2cents.
I've now seen the first 4 episodes of dual survivor.
I find it very entertaining, and to a smaller extent educational, but mostly entertaining.
I was amazed at Cody barefoot in the snow, and a little disappointed to read here that Dave knew all about that. I like the international destinations.

I don't mind that situations are engineered, the alternative seems to be a 'big brother' type show where there are hours and hours of footage waiting for something to happen, then edited down, and still requiring a narrator to make sense of it. To me, if the producers can find a dead deer (as suggested in a previous post), and use it in the show so that someone can demonstrate how to skin it, that's a lot better than killing a deer for the making of a TV show. That said I wouldn't want them to pretend that Dave had taken it down with a slingshot or artful paddle strike.

My other favorite survival shows have been Ray Mears and Survivorman. We joke at home, that Survivorman mostly survives off his own fat reserves, as his foraging seem somewhat meager. Two scorpions and an eathworm type thing. Perhaps the lesson is it's good to start off overweight :)

I'm digging the show! Best new stuff since Survivorman. I started out kind of rooting for Dave as I knew him through the Youtube vids a little. And he's kind of a cowboy shoot 'em up military type (like I pretend to be). My first impression of Cody was as some weird, barefoot hippy type I wouldn't relate to. But the funny thing is 6 shows in I'm kinda leaning towards Cody as my favorite! A little touchy-feely for my tastes, but he does know his sh!t and lays it out well. Dave seems a little more "Bear-ish" in taking chances. Either way, I like the two person dynamic.
Which brings us to Man Woman Wild. Only one show I've seen, but I liked it a lot. I've seen mike in something previosly, a jungle survival bit I think. Having his wife along, a non survival expert, puts a much more realistic spin on things; brings it home so to speak.
ODA that is super cool that you taught Special Forces stuff to Mike! No wonder that PSK was spot on! Did you say somewhere that he changed his name? It wasn't Mike Hunt was it? That would be embarassing.

I like the show, and I'm a big fan of Les Stroud, less so of his harmonica playing but I understand it is good for his morale.

His name was Mike Penney when he first came to the team. After he graduated from SFQC he changed his name to Myke Hawkeye. Later he once again changed his name to Myke Hawke. That sounds a little bit too much like "My Cock" to me....LOL. Mykie's a good boy anyhow! We had some good times together.

I'd never heard of him until about a week ago. Did some research to see if he's legit. He is but they don't like him very much over at professionalsoldiers.com. My read on the hate is they think he's a loud, self-promoting professional rather than a quiet professional.

I've never been in the military so it's neither here nor there for me, so I'll judge him based on the merits of his show. I like it a lot. Both educational and entertaining.

I was pretty bummed with the Washington State one. Having lived in NW Oregon all my life I thought there should have been more info in the episode like Dave showing how to make a bundle bow Vs them just giving him one. Or more types of traps and snares. Or Cody showing more of our edible plants. But maybe that's just me, what did you guys think of that one?

I'm loving this show. A neat idea on how to show that there's no ONE TRUE PATH to follow for survival.

Of course, 4 or 5 shows in you get kinda tired of "Oh! Cody has no shoes on!", and "Oh! Cody eats nasty bugs!".

Dave has said they can film up to 40 hours of material for each episode so a lot of useful info gets left out.

Sad but true. It only means... That the show needs to be longer! =P I'd sit and watch it for two hours if it meant there would be good material.
