I am not a fan of Toys but you plain hurt that thing. I was waiting for the transfer case and or tranny to explode like a Sony deck. Nice vids otherwise.

She'll do that all weekend long, and then drive to work all week. If it was a jeep I wouldn't have gone out alone.

Maybe you wouldn't have, but if it had been a Jeep you could have. See Jeeps can go all week in terrain like that while not over revving the motor/transfer case/tranny, and then get you to work. They call them Toys for a reason. They are toys. Just cause my BB gun can last forever does not mean I want to go hunt bear with it. :D Take a jeep trail in a Jeep and leave the Toys in the kids room.

I would like to apologize. My last post, although how I feel, was definitely argumentative to say the least. I do not try to be an ass and hope your were not offended. I feel strongly that Jeeps are the best and most copied design out there for off/on road use. This does not mean I should belittle the vehicle you like. I reacted strongly to the "If I was in a jeep I would not have gone out there alone" line. I am sorry.

All I know is the only two other rigs were the pair of jeeps (TJ & XJ) that came and left on trailers.  I ran black diomond trails all day and never saw them

Lots of local jeep owners are always breaking something. I have always wanted to own one but no one has ever told me first hand how reliable they are

They're pretty reliable, at least from what I've seen. The local jeep owners are probably breaking them by using sub-par components, or being a sub-par driver. I've an uncle with an XJ who has 170k on the 4.0.

I hardly have any action shots of my XJ, but here it is, in chronological order.
The first bumper I had weighed like 250lbs with the winch, and the mounting points didn't go back far enough, so if I hit something, it'd point upwards. Also, I had that roof rack that killed my mileage, and was cheaply made, so paint wouldn't stick.

Here's a picture of my rear locker totally killing me in the snow...it either pushed through my steering, or broke loose and assed into the nearest tree....

Sweet new fenders.

Image
Comp cut the rear corners for more clearance behind the tire, because if you drop off a rock and hit that corner, your rear window pops out and lands on the ground. Also, went from my old 31's to these 33" swampers.
Image
Ameriguard sprayed on the bottom half, all the way around except my grille. I've rubbed it on trees and it stays put just fine, no more scuffed paint!

Disc brake 8.8 rear out of a ford explorer. 4.56 gears and an electric Ected locker that switches from posi to spool

New front HP30 with 4.56 and ARB

New bumper that I hand built.

New tires, 33x15.5 Mickey Thompsons

I don't have a lot of off-roading stories that are worth telling, but I've had fun. I've been stuck up to my belly button (while I was in the drivers seat) in a river before, and all the electric went dead....other than that, I've never had it very stuck.

Hey, you people do understand that when you put big tires on a 4x4 thats not necessarily a good idea, and that can/will dig you a bigger hole to get out of. Did any of you know that the majority of axles have PRESSED in wheel bearings, and when the tire gets too heavy, i.e. too BIG, the wheel bearing is removed, and not the way you want it to be. But just to be PC about this, I stopped reading after this poster to point out an obvious soon to be broke down rig.

You do realize that insulting a members rig in one of your first posts on a forum isn't the best way to start out.

I dont think I am insulting, I am being correct. I have seen this many times, and, trying to give a "heads up". If you dont want to take my advice, then go ahead, and let your rig leave you stranded.

That and, it was not my first post.

Yes, you are right, one of. But... I was simply pointing out it's not a good idea to do what was done. Further more, did I say it was a piece of trash (the other persons rig)? No, I was just simply stating the obvious of how it works and what I have seen happen when such things are done. Cant handle THE TRUTH on a forum, heh, what chance does one have in real life????? Suck it up man.

I have been a lurker for awhile, but this is my area so its my first post. Shot: any tire can dig a hole, it comes down to a lot of other variables on wether you get stuck. A vehicle that is high centered is high centered, no matter what size tires are on it. The key is being able to extract your rig on your own if you have to (good winch, snatch block, etc). Offroad driving experience is also extremely helpfull so you actually know how to use your equipment. On the wheel bearing issue, every vehicle has unit bearings or semi-float shafts till you get up to 3/4 ton trucks and above. Yes you can overwork/overload them but he was installing 33" tall tires (looked a litttle wider than i like, but its his preference). His D30 front will handle them no problem, his rear if its a D35 should be replaced (they are shit to begin with using stock tires), if its an 8.25 rear, he is good to go. The key is preventive maint. on everything and not overdoing it which he did not. I do this for a living (making 4wd parts, building expedition vehicles, buggies, Yotas, Jeeps, etc) and I have wheeled all around the US...so i feel i have a pretty good handle on what works, and what you can get away with safely.

No, I feel he is fine for the tire height he wants to use. But like i said, 15.5" wide tires do cause ball joint and unit bearing issues. In my opinion, he would have been better to stay with a 12.5" wide tire. Its when 37" and above go on, that things really start to come apart on XJ, YK and TJ's. If you want to run something that large safely, you need dedicated driveline. To stay on topic.. I am building this from scratch: Image
All alluminum FJ45 w/ 6.0L GM LQ9. That tire in the pic is a 40" tall Goodyear MTR.

Very nice! I love those aluminum bodies, just wish they made one for early broncos too. Just be careful what hardware you use, galvanic corrosion can be a real bitch with an aluminum body. And the painting sequence is critical, need to get all the aluminum painted before final assembly... worst thing you can do is have bare aluminum touch bare steel.

Agreed lets get back to showing off our rigs.

Had a nice day wheeling the frozen trails behind Philadelphia airport. Frozen = no mud, but fun none the less.

most public gamelands have trails. some mining or logging company land (that's not posted) have trails. or just find the guys in town with big trucks covered in mud and ask. just stay out of any land with posted signs or gates (they're there for a reason) unless you have owner premission. when in doubt, stay out! offroaders have enough problems without tresspassers making trouble for us tread lightly types.

There are websites devoted to wheelin where you can meet up with people that know places to go. There are several places that I go some are public land where it is completely legal to use the old logging trails or private land owned by friends and then last thewre are privately owned Off Road Use parks where you actually pay to use the through them you park. But as far as finding places your best bet is to hook up with a group that wheels then through them you will find some good SAFE AND LEGAL places to go.
