Anyone happen to know the dimensions on that Dynamed drop thigh pouch they had on clearance at galls awhile back?

You'll have to tell me if this is the same one, but it looks like 7 x 7 x 4 (or 196 cubic inches).

Elk, I forgot to add one thing that I know most all of us ZS'ers know by now:
Sort of an unofficial rule... but please post images with your submission. Video works too!

Anyway, I say let's get this started!

8. You must have all items in your possession and submit at least one picture, or video link.

So does that mean we could use a 30" piece of 2" PVC with caps for our pouch?

[V=Pi*r*r*L or 3.14*1"*1" *30"=94 cubic inches]

Makes it easier to carry a big knife. ;-)

Or does it have to be able to attach to a belt?

You can attach a 30" piece of PVC to a belt. Use webbing and duct tape to make a belt loop. Like a sword scabbard. Or throw a sling on it.

Re: Mag Pouch Survival Kit Contest?

Two clarifications please (posting instead of emailing so we all get the answer)

elkhills wrote:[b]Pouch Based Survival Kit OFFICIAL RULES
3. It will be assumed that you are wearing season appropriate clothing. It is not assumed that you have a water bottle, knife or any other tools or equipment.

Does this mean that ECD items are not counted?

5. Items that will not fit inside the pouch or container may be attached to loops, straps or other attachment points within reason. Example: a carabiner may be clipped to an outside MOLLE loop, but a second ammo pouch may not.

Suggestion to this rule that may make it more solid - individual items may be attached to the outside, but no other "container" type item to hold other items.

Short answer: Yes, that should be okay.

While the spirit of the contest is to learn & share how much can be done with the small to medium sized belt pouches, there is nothing in the rules to prevent using other containers that meet the <101 C.I. size requirement. Plus, I know I'd like to see what you come up with!

The one thing we do not want to do is stifle creativity!

Remember "We the People of ZS" will be voting for their favorite in the end, so likely the practicality of carry will be a factor.

the_klenzer wrote:Does this mean that ECD items are not counted?

Correct. The kit should be as much of a stand alone survival kit as possible. Something you could work with even if all you had were the clothes on your back.

the_klenzer wrote:Suggestion to this rule that may make it more solid - individual items may be attached to the outside, but no other "container" type item to hold other items.

Good idea. Maybe something along the lines of "items attached to the outside may not be used as an additional container, nor exceed the size of the PSK container itself"?
We'll discuss it and get back to ya.

Expanded OFFICIAL RULE #5 for clarification.

5. Items that will not fit inside the pouch or container may be attached to loops, straps or other attachment points within reason. The overall volume of exterior items may not exceed the volume of your PSK pouch or container. Example: A single flashlight too long for the pouch may be attached to the exterior, an AR-15 may not. Only individual items may be attached to the main kit exterior, no additional pouches, bags, boxes or containers will be allowed. Example: a carabiner may be clipped to an outside MOLLE loop, but a second ammo pouch may not.

Dang, I was totally going to attach my truck to my pouch. :P

I'm totally into this. I was just cleaning up around today and am finding a bunch of little "extras" I have laying around that can go into a mag pouch for kit. Woot.

So with the updated rule #5, this would be acceptable, giving people more like 201 ci available for the kit?

Image

Just wondering. I actually have a different pouch I'm going to attempt to build within. It has 96.25ci inner volume if my calculations are correct and I'm not going to attach exterior items to it. If it doesn't fit, I might find a different method.

Man, I hope it doesn't turn into that :(
We just don't want to hold anybody back creatively. Trying to leave enough wiggle room for people to get the most out of their kits.

What do you guys think? Should we limit the outside stuff to the extreme?

Um... I'd think the flashlight would be okay... (although that is pretty big one.) However, using the insides to store anything but batteries would not be.

I'm sure we'll have to iron-out the rules a little as we go along. There will probably be a few case-by-case judgment calls to make. Above all - let's have fun. I think this is a great exercise.

Next month we can try to pack a PSK into a thimble or something. LOL

Just to be clear for everyone, Murph is right; The Maglite would be allowed, but very little else would be acceptable outside the pouch as the flashlights volume is nearly equal to the pouch itself.

And it could only contain batteries. Use as an additional container is not allowed per the rule.

Oh.
My bad.

Yeah, go ahead and put it outside the pouch- just don't put anything in it (use as a container) and make sure it measures smaller overall than the main kit pouch itself.

Maybe a clarification to the rules is it order. Something like:

"One large item can be securely attached to the outside, but cannot be used for additional storage."

Otherwise you could lash down a bunch of stuff into the grenade loops.

GRRRRR...the listing for these pouches on eBags.com says they are 100 cubic inches. But I looked more carefully and I'm pretty sure they are over. There's a main pouch, a smaller front pouch, and some "sleeves" on the side. What really stinks is I ordered 3 of them!!! I mean, they're cool - so I'll take them. But now I have to order something else to use in the contest. Oh well. I guess I'll just suffer my wife's wrath for a couple days and get over it...

According to your link that pouch is 100 cu. According to my calculator 7x5x2.5=87.5 cu.

Judge rules... go for it!
