I was thinking today about the bug zapper and how it may help in a zombie infested post apocalyptic world.
Someone in another thread had suggested using a noise beacon to draw as many zombies to an area as possible and then using a tactical nuke to send them all to hell. Well, the zombie zapper will work along that principal, but will be a long term defense system (meaning no nukes) for your stronghold after the shit dies down.
After you or your team have found a sustainable and defensable location to set up a permanent home, choose 4 or 5 locations around the base at least 100 yards out. At each of these locations, place a noise beacon that can be operated by remote control. Be sure that the power source for the beacon is sufficient as well (solar cells would probably be the best source).
Okay, the bait is set (like the light and hum of a bug zapper), now you just need the kill mechanism. I like the idea of land mines, but maybe technology will give us something more lethal that can be powered by battery or solar cells (focused microwaves?). You can also dig tiger pits or other type of imobilizers as well.
The idea is that if your stronghold is discovered and a large group of zombies is at your gate (I wouldn't waste this system on a small group of zombies as it may draw more to your location) you can activate all 5 beacons. Hopefully, the noise from the beacons alerts the zombies to an easier prey. Since you have so many beacons, the zombies should split into smaller groups and follow the noise to the source.
So you've now turned one large and strong group of zombies into several weaker groups. The explosives and other methods won't kill all of the zombies, but should reduce their numbers quite a bit.
Now you have a choice to make. You can shut off the beacons and sweep the area to kill all of the remaining undead, or you can use the destraction that was created to bug out (probably my choice). If you're bugging out though, maybe a low grade nuke is still a great idea.
