Escape training

Postby darkangel98s » Sat Aug 27, 2005 4:14 pm

I have just been cruising the net, and watching a lot of video clips on a rather intresting sport called free running. Have any of you heard of it? Fricking amazing stuff.

Now I understand the sheer level of training you would need to do it, but still, I might do this kind of thing in my off time, as it would be one HELL of a workout.

Anyway, how useful do you think this would be in a P.A.W. situation, not just a zombie one, but a lot of the others. Especially in scouting and scavanging.

Hmm seems like it would be extremely useful if and only if you don't kill yourself practiceing it first >_>

There's already another thread on this in one of the other sections. Do a search on 'parkour'.

Ah yes, free running. The art of running all over the goddamn place like a kid with ADD.

It is a cool thing and is very impressive, but they make it sound too much like a martial art.

Is "Free Running" Just the same as Extreme Walking?

I've have done extreme walking before. I'm in agreat physical condition so it's naturall for me. But f you attempt this stuff without proper preperation your going to break both your hands and legs. Especially when jumping from pole to pole.

YES! I tried to do the free running thing before I broke my leg... Well, you can see how that worked out. It was super fun. God, it's just so awesome. The feeling you get when you acctually pull something off makes you all giddy. Of course, I was far from what you see on the nissan commercials, but I still had fun. It does take a lot out of you, and is a really good exercise. Then again, you get all arrogant, and end up breaking the bottom part of you femur off... not that I would know about that or anything...

Although, from what I know, free running is based on Parkour. David Belle started Parkour. It's more of a philosophy to be one with your surroundings. He uses the basic, but most effective techniques.

Free running is similar, but a bit more flashy/showy. They do flips when launching, which isn't necessary to go over the obstacle. Looks cool though.

They do have the same base techniques though.

Looks cool as hell especially when played with music, but it is far from practical. Can you imagine trying to do any of those stunts wearing even 20 lbs of collective gear? Not to mention most of it is simply showy and serves little practical purpose.

That's where Parkour comes in. Free running is more of an exhibition. :)
It will most likely be useful if you're doing recon with minimal gear. It gets you outta ther fast.

Someone who knows it compared to someone who doesn't would have an advantage. I watched this thing on the TLC about it, those guys can really get around. I think even with 20lbs of gear they'd be able to get over most obstacles (just not in a fancy way). They're agility and strength is impressive. If I had the body type (wiry) I'd definately want to learn that.

be prepared to suffer some broken ankle in the process. Which can be tricky to heal. The reward of beeing able to execute such move is nonetheless unvaluable!

as a practitioner of parkour, i have to put in my two cents. all the flipping etc, isnt necessary for parkour.yes it takes a lot of training, and it is similar to a martial art in terms of philosophy, dedication, and training. Body type isn't really a factor to do it, and if you're getting broken ankles you're trying to attempt too much at once. Parkour is about training and progression. When it comes to how useful it would be in a real life situation, just remember this... I can get away from the zombies no problem. If you're out there with me, remember that I don't have to run faster than the zombies, I just have to run faster than you :-P

I wanna see them do that crap with a 45 pound pack, weapon ammo, and wearing combat boots and rugged outdoor clothing.

I think the most important skill that this activity could teach would be the ability to fall properly as well as take a fall. Everything else would be gravy.

Aikido. Falling first, rolling back up next, making opponent fall last.

+1. I think Akido would be more beneficial than Parkour.
