Next ZS:X Charity Event!

Postby faerie9 » Sun Jul 19, 2009 12:37 pm

Well, it's nearly 4 months on since we raised a lot of money for the NSPCC by hiking up Pen-Y-Fan.

It's about time we did something new.

I thought it might be an idea to open a thread up to generate some ideas and then we can plan something official.

So: what do you fancy doing to raise money for charity? Bear in mind it will be autumn so consider the weather cold and wet

I have booked a place on this sponsored walk (I’m too old and fat to do the run) http://www.bordersar.org.uk/site/ Not a national organisation but it covers the area I play in so I keen to help them.

Something indoors. A sponsored 'do something stupid' event? Or a real life movie event where everyone brings a bunch of canned food to donate to a charity as their entrance fee?

That looks interesting, and the 16k sounds do-able (23k might be too, but I don't know the area / route at all and it's fair to say I haven't walked that far all at once since before my 5-year-old son was born).

If you'd rather organise something ourselves, there's a couple of options in the South I can suggest. Some of these are quite long, but we can always shorten them depending on popular demand. They're all fairly low-level so they should be practicable in the autumn (and the winter, if you fancy that sort of thing).

How about a sponsored Ridgeway walk from Overton Hill to Streatley (or vice-versa, depending on whether faerie9 wants to start from home or finish there  ) It'd involve an overnight or two since it's 43 miles, but I've walked it before and it's fairly easy-going. Streatley's got a railway station which makes getting to/from that end fairly easy if you're relying on public transport.

Or there's the Wayfarer's Walk which also starts near Marlborough but then runs to the South coast. A 15-mile section should be easily done ina day, or we can stretch it out if you fancy a night (or more) on the trail.

Edit:
And then there's the Hangers Way, which I don't recall having walked upon but is 20 miles, starts at a railway station and very nearly finishes at one too (there's one at the 15-mile mark).

I have booked a place on the 16 k walk. its hill but not to steep, follows the pennine way. If anyone is intrested I start looking for campsites in the area for the night before.

How about a sponsored walk across morcambe bay?

http://www.morecambe.co.uk/walk.html

We've unfortunately just missed the one the bay search and rescue organise each year, it was yesterday, but there's nothing to say we can't organise another one either for the BS&R or another charity.

Ideally I'd wanted to limit it to one endurance and one voluntary event per year. For example we had the hike earlier this year, and maybe doing something like giving blood or donating some time to do something. Its on the table at the next meeting so we'll see what folks come up with when drunk and chilled.

Me too, although in my case it's because I received a blood transfusion 20 years ago.

And according to http://www.blood.co.uk the time limit for piercing, tattooing etc. is 4 months.
