We both agree on parkour as exercise, yes; but don't forget that the vast majority of actions, except for direct drops and scaling vertical obstacles that can't only be limited as parkour techiques only, require momentum. If you're stopped and then want do do a running leap or move, oh, a field of handrails for staircases, then forward momentum is required and you don't have it going already.

Forgive my sentence structure; I'm pretty feverish at the moment.

I would think it'd be a very useful skill to have. I can't do a roll but I know how to run up walls and vault. Zombies coming my way? I run up a wall to get away from them. If I have too much gear, gear's getting dropped (or thrown up on top). Having 550 cord tied to a bag or something (that I could use to pull said bag up the wall when I'm up there) would be a good idea acutally.

Parkour is the art of movement. Knowing a few tricks to get away from zombies is very beneficial.

I saw this show on History Channel called "Apocalypse Man", that was right up this alley.

He was moving through the PAW like he was LONGING for a complicated bone fracture. I mean, it sure looked cool, and would be lots of fun, until you see bone poking through the skin...

Certainly not a bad form of exercise or mode of movement, when you don't care about drawing attention. I'd be willing to guess carrying a pack heavier than 30 lbs is going to limit your ability to escape, so a person desperate enough to use this may be ejecting their gear before scaling a wall. That said, one could tailor a light kit (think a snug MOLLE vest with limited storage and/or weapon(s) ) for parkour movement.

Now me, I'll stick to my rope and grappling hook.

See my post above.

That guy chose to cross a river with the help of a crowbar, some .550, and an opened bridge. Instead of wading and/or swimming.

Anyone do Free Running / Parkour?

Could make for an interesting 'caught out in the open at XXX event' type of getting home / 'to your BOB' skill.

I very much agree. I have practiced the climbing and stretching out bits, but as for actually running around jumping over shit, can't say I have. I do wanna learn though, and my physique seems well adapted to it.

I just looked up on Wikipedia, seems like Parkour is *TECHNICALLY* what we are talking about here, as free running is more for astheticness

Had to post this one.

Others I like -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2kJZOfq7zk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEeqHj3Nj2c&feature=related

Starts off kind of cheesy, but David Belle is one of THE dudes in parkour - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfvlAFrY-jk&feature=related

I'm working towards some of this stuff with some friends. No, we are NOT able to do a lot of that. Quite frankly, I'm less about all the cool looking aerials and more about getting from A to B as efficiently and quickly as possible. I'd rather be able to choose to go over, under, or through something than have to go around it.

If I knew about it when I was younger (20 + yrs ago) I would have tried it out. That would be great for the cardio and upper body, right? I'll look into it for the balance and basic movements. I don't need to break anything nowadays. my 1 year old keeps me on my toes.

I used too. I stopped when my growth spurts made me a danger too myself, I lost the knowledge of my own dimensions, and fucked myself up. Having recently recovered from a broken arm, I didn't wanna break anything else.

Free Running has been as much a part of my workout regimen as lifting weights, firearms training, and karate has for the last few years. I've even gone as far as tailoring my loadout's and gear choices around being able to Free Run.

However, I've never much been a fan of the technical stuff like doing flips or anything that's only purpose is to look "pretty". Things like scaling buildings/structures, climbing, rolling, sliding, etc... are what I've always been interested in. Getting from A to B in the fastest way possible. I would never do a flip off a rail/ledge when it would be faster or just as fast to simply jump. I do admire those who do it though, they are the reason it's become so popular.

I can certainly see how Free Running training can be an advantage in the ZPAW or any other shorter lived SHTF situation. Doing it on the fly like that can be extremely dangerous though. It actually takes a lot of planning.

Ahha! That be why he packs PS90's!
Any recommendations on a good pack for a GHB thats stick like glue. Parkour is the only way to convince me to run, because I have always loathed running. I will bike, rollerblade, do pushups, I just hate treadmills. And running. But I am trying to turn that around...

Exacty. Unfortunately I can't bring them along yet because they aren't SBR'd but they will be before Christmas. Until then it's just my FivseveN and Sub2K.

I highly reccomend the 5.11 Rush 24 Pack or the 5.11 Select Carry Bag.. Both are perfect for this roll and they don't get in the way too much if you are wearing a War Belt. If you plan on carrying an SMG in the Select Carry bag you won't have a lot of room for anything else so if you want to carry a bunch of gear and an SMG I'd go with the Rush pack.

It's certainly a workout and it's one of my main sources of cardio.
