Score!

Postby CoffeeGuy » Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:45 pm

Just happened to be in the right place at the right time... someone local was passing along some of his antennas to a newb. I am that newb! ...just need to figure out how to hook it up... (scratching my head)

The two are custom-designed antennas; One a 30 footer encased in a two-inch fibreglass PVC pipe. He couldn't remember what bands it covered but said he made a lot of CW contacts with Japan (from the Portland, OR area) on forty meters with only one watt of power! He thinks this antenna was a half or quater wave length but because of his dementia he couldn't remember. The second antenna is also encased inside a fibreglass two inch pipe and thinks it is a six meter job. I'm heading over tonight to dismantle the fibreglass pipe into twenty-foot sections. I'm stoked and can't wait to figure out how to set it up ad get it back into use.

They were both layin on the ground when I got there so I am not sure how they were secured vertically.

Well.... I managed to get them home without being pulled over. They stuck off the fron and back of the jeep just a little. I did have a blaze orange vest tied to the back end.

Now... how do they go up?!?! Looks like they'll be fun once up and running.

Since they were homebuilt figuring out how to get them back together could be a problem. Any idea if they were built from published plans? If so, getting a copy of the plans would make your task a lot easier.

I wish there were plans. The guy was a seriously advanced engineer who taught electrical engineering for a while after retiring just for the fun of it. He played around with a couple designs until he came up with this one that uses fiberglass piping to house the antenna - he camo painted it so that it would blend into the tree that he had is set up in (his community rules stated that he couldn't have anything higher than his rooftop - this thing went up over 60 feet in the air and stuck out of the tree by 3 or 4 feet)

I can reassemble the sections. I just don't know how to tie it off, where to tie it off, and which of the wires goes to what (I am a newb).

I'd love to help you, but I suspect there's a bit of distance involved here.

You might consider finding out what the local hams are doing for field day this weekend and dropping by to ask for help.
