Club Call Sign

Postby 44Dave » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:30 pm

I'm thinking we need one after the club gets official. Can we think of a vanity call sign that is ZS-like?
I suppose a ZS Board member would have to be the call sign trustee. If only we could think of a ZS Board member who was an amateur radio operator...

I could be wrong, but I do believe Kyle is a ham. In any case, I'm not really "up" on the FCC requirements for obtaining a club call, but I'm pretty sure they want a physical location for the club station. That might be a problem for us.

Also, we still don't have all the officers elected, a membership roster, a club constitution that's been ratified, etc., so a club call seems premature to me.

The physical location would be Kyle's house. To my understanding that is kosher, but it would need to be clarified to be certain. I can take a look at the FCC rulebook, or maybe there's someone here who knows an FCC employee he could ask.

I did mention this is after the club gets more official like - we do have a few details to take care of yet. But there's no harm in thinking about the fun stuff while we do the boring stuff, is there? ;)

True, you did say after, and I somehow missed that the first time I read it. :)

If you build it they will come! I'd just start working on creating one and then set it up.. Someone needs to be trustee of the callsign.

First the club will need to choose a club trustee.

Part 97 says that to have a club you need the following.
http://wireless.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/wtbbye.pl?http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/get-cfr.cgi?TITLE=47&PART=97&SECTION=5&TYPE=TEXT

A name,
A document of organization,
Management,
A primary purpose devoted to amateur service activities consistent with the FCC Rules,
At least four members,
A license trustee designated by an officer of the club, and
The trustee must hold an amateur service operator license grant.
Then we can apply for a vanity call.

On the official form to apply for a vanity call you get to pick 3 calls. I would stick to a 2x3 as there are more of them, and the KZ0's are almost empty. These three are all available and since they are KZ they are obviously US calls.

KZ0MBI, KZ0MBY, KZ0MBE

KZ0MBY is best, for sure.

Indubitably, my good sir and/or madam.

Oh, I am SO lovin' this!
If KZOMBY, KZOMBI, KZOMBE are taken, maybe a backup choice of KZSARC

And what zone would that call be in NoAm?

Hint: Needs a number in there.

However, KZ5ARC might suffice...

Hmmmmmm, could we use a '0' in Z0MBY instead of an 'o'?

That's already a zero in KZ0MBY. I was talking about your KZSARC idea, which has no numeral in it at all. While a "4" can substitute for an "A" (K4THY is a local ham I know named Kathy) currently six character calls are in 2x3 format, with the zone numeral in the 3rd character position, not the 4th (as would be needed to replace the A with a 4). That's why I suggested replacing the "S" with a "5"

I was really hoping, that one of the KZ0MBY call signs would work. Yeah, if the other 3 options are not available then KZ5ARC would work as well. It just isn't quite as 'catchy'.

I just checked and kz0mby /i /e are still available. And kz5arc is also available... I didn't find any applications with any of these call signs either.

I'm not familiar with any amateurs callsigns in the world that don't have a number. I'm also not sure how kz0XXX changed to kzoXXX.

A club trustee will be necessary. Traditionally this is an elected officer in the club. Also this is usually an amateur operator who has sufficient experience maintaining and repairing club equipment. But I don't think the club will wind up with it's own equipment in this case.

One thing I'd point out... KZ0MBY would be a mouthful for phone contesting. Kilo-Zulu-Zero-Mike-Bravo-Yankee

Of course, you could do as the Brits and substitute "Zed" for "Zero", which would make it slightly less of a tongue twister.

Kilo-Zulu-Five-Alpha-Romeo-Charlie isn't bad phonetically, but not as visually appealing.
