After the resounding success of PaddleFest last weekend, I got home and immediately started thinking about the next trip...

There's a trip I've been dying to do deep in the Adirondacks that would be a lot of fun once Fall gets here...a stretch of the Oswegatchie River, from Inlet to High Falls...

Here are some links relating to the trip:

http://www.damouth.com/Canoe/oswegatc.shtml

http://www.canoekayak.com/canoe/oswegatchieriver/

http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM2Y ... High_Falls

...and here's a googlemap that I made of the trip and it's location in the ADKs...

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie ... 6&t=p&z=11

My thinking is that people can arrive Thursday night and/or Friday morning, and do a short day on Friday, based on when we get on the water...we paddle a full day on Saturday, hopefully making it all the way up to High Falls to camp there Saturday night...Sunday, we paddle back downstream to our cars and head home...

Because we are going against the current on the way out, our return trip is much quicker...there are no rapids or portages on the trip, although there will be some beaver dams and such that will require some stopping to maneuver over/around them...

This is a wild section of the Adirondacks, unpopulated and unspoiled by the last hundred years...we'll be paddling away from the civilized world and into some true backcountry...

Please reply in this thread if you are interested in this trip, and if so, what weekends during the end of September or beginning of October may work for you...

Jamie

I'm in. Would you recommend a kayak or a canoe for this trip?

I'll be rocking a canoe, but either should work...a shorter canoe/kayak that is easily able to turn will be more useful than a long thin canoe/kayak built for speed and cruising in a straight line...it will also be a good thing not to mind bashing your boat a little...dragging it over beaver dams could be rough on a boat that you don't want scratched...

So based on what I used this past weekend would you recommend I use a kayak over that canoe?

Nope, I think that you'd be good to go with that canoe of yours...maybe just a longer double bladed paddle...like 240-250cm...

Sounds good then, I'm going to pick up a kayak paddle later this week.

I'm definatly interested in another trip this fall. Weekends in late September/early October are pretty open at the moment so no real restrictions there.

Sure, the only weekends I'm booked are Sept 25th-27th and Oct 23rd-25th.
If I can keep my schedule clear, I'm in.

Not that I can make the trips at all this year, but I have been sufficiently inspired.

I'm sitting here right now studying the plans for a PakYak, and think I'm going to give it a try!

Trip. Yes.

I'm jammed up on the weekend of October 10th (going to see Kiss at MSG) but the previous weekend might work....

I can pencil in a maybe for the first weekend in October. But don't be changing dates on my account, it's only a maybe.

I'm going to go ahead and call it for the weekend of October 2-4, 2009...I will be taking Friday off, and will be getting to the site Thursday night to camp by the launch, and then (assuming that people will be heading in Friday morning) would like to launch after an early lunch...

I spoke to my friend, who's an Adirondack Guide and has done the trip numerous times before, and he said that we should be fine in terms of water level...we may have to line our boats through a few short stretches when the river gets broad and shallow...

We may have some cold weather, but not likely too bad for ZSNYers!

Once {{{if}}} some people post back positively, I'll post some more information about the trip and put up a web page!

YAY!!!

Jamie

It'll be a few days before I'm certain about my scheduled obligations this semester, but I'm likely in. I'd kinda like to not make the whole drive from Buffalo by myself this time; anybody up for carpooling?

I want the spot in Rick's blue canoe! (does this mean I have to buy a blue life vest?)

I'm in. I'll probably be coming up Thursday as I have a load of vacation time I need to use or lose anyway. This will give me chance to try out the Hennessy Undercover in some more challenging Adirondack conditions.

I'll head over to Wanakena Thursday after work, probably arriving sometime between 5 and 6 pm...there is a huge field available for tent camping not far from the boat launch, but I'll probably just head into the woods far enough to find 2 good trees for my HH...

I'm hoping to be on the water by noon on Friday...

I've got some nice maps and guides with info about the trip, I posted them:
here and here

My winter tarp came yesterday, so my HH Explorer Deluxe will be rocking a "flying tent" setup for the trip!
If I get real crazy I might even throw in a stove jack and run my outfitter's stove with it.

Once again, space in my canoe is available. Let me know soonest if you need it.

My radiator went on my vehicle two days ago so as long as I can get that replaced relatively cheap this week without being raped by the mechanics I'm still down for this trip.

If you get there in good time on Thursday, you can do the stretch from Inlet to Wanakena (the opposite direction than we'll be paddling for the trip) on the Oswegatchie, which is class 2 and 3 rapids...I have info and maps if needed...

Knowing Rick, we'll leave his place at like 7am, so we'd probably have time haha.
