Summer in VA

Postby GunsUp » Fri Jun 17, 2011 8:25 pm

So I'm in North East VA for 10 weeks this summer.... and I'm trying to stay busy and use all my weekends (8) to their fullest. I've been to DC several times and will likely continue going there about once every 2 years for work, so I've seen (or will see) all the stuff you can see without a car... all the monuments, buildings and museums in central DC (+Udvar-Hazey).

Firm dates:
6/18 - Gettysburg, Antietam, Fort Frederick
6/19 - Work travel
8/19 - Leave

Firm Plans w/o Dates
1 weekend - DC with wife
1 weekend - VA beach with friends
1 weekend - Shenandoah with friends

Planned unless they interfere with firm plans above
6/25 - Greenbrier with the Marystanis
1 day trip - Manassas, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg
8/14 - Ramsey's Draft

Things of interest that haven't been formed into a coherent plan
Museum of the Confederacy + Richmond Battlefield + Petersburg Battlefield
Jamestown + Williamsburg + Yorktown
Monticello
Appotomax Courthouse
Mount Vernon

Anything I'm missing that I wouldn't be able to easily see without a car? I'm not interested in more than about a 4hr drive from Fredricksburg, just not enough time.

Hey GunsUp!
Lemme know if you meet up sometime. I was talking with Phil_in_CS the other day, when I found out you'd be making the hike.

When your in VA Beach this is a great place to spend a few hours http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/, Saturdays there are usually flight ops going and the museum itself is pretty sweet, $10 to get in the door. If you get lucky you might catch them working on a plane or two
