Wow, that is an impressive slide. But if all it affected was fifty extra yards and a staircase, then that doesn't sound so bad.
I'd go in on a motor boat with you. Can't fish from a canoe, though? Or is it a matter of getting to other parts of the lake?

it's a matter of being able to troll, which is tough in a canoe.

I am OK with going to Ross Lake and pitching in on a motor boat.

but everyone that goes needs to understand that this is not a car camping expedition. Attendees can only bring what they can carry. As I understand it, there will be no room for non essentials like folding chairs, ice chests, and firewood. This location is very remote, and would truly test our abilities.

So if you're interested in an adventure, and want to have Summergeddon at Ross Lake, Speak up now.

Do it. As much as I like car camping, I'd like to throw some uncertainty in the mix. I need more stories.

I am in no matter what we decide to do. I would like to get in on the motor boat to be able to do some fishing for sure but I am not sure that I will be able to afford it. I say that if we can get at least five guys we can get that many people or maybe six from the resort to the camp ground in just two trips. Shouldn't be that bad and the cost goes way down. Plus you can tow at least one canoe with the motor boat. I have the same size boat and motor combo and I know it is is capable of being loaded and still tow the canoe.

Another move would be to rent the motorboat and one canoe for five or six guys and then we can load the boat with four guys and gear and the canoe with the other two guys. Then we just tow the canoe or let those two guys row if they want to.

So I guess we need to get a roster of people committed to the trip and see what our options will be from there.

I have Myself, Seanwins, Black November, Dr. Gonzo, DropZedFred and d.riley who are for sure in. Is there anyone else??

OK I just looked at the site and the motorboat is $95 a day plus tax. Also the canoe is $30 a day plus tax. That comes to $137.50 a day for both. Split six ways it is $22.92 per person, per day. If we show up on Friday and then leave on Monday that will be three full days which is $68.76 per person for the trip. Don't forget to add the $5.00 for the back country permit and the $28.00 for the transport across Diablo Lake and the truck ride to the resort. Add it all together and you get $101.76 per person. I can swing that so if we can get six people to go in on that deal I am good to go.

You could always park your vehicles at the Ross Dam Trail and hike down. That way you don't have to pay the fee to be transported across Diablo. The Ross Dam Trail is just under a mile long. And the back country permits through the Park Service are actually free. I have friends with the North Cascades Park, so if you need any help setting up a permit I can help.

I am sceduled to work that weekend, but I've been trying to get it off. I don't know if it will be possible (we're pretty short handed at work right now :x ) but maybe I can meet up with you guys for a day or two.

I'm in. I just have to see if I can get that Monday off. If not it looks like I might have to do the "park your vehicles at the Ross Dam Trail and hike down" bit so I can leave on Sunday.

OK that makes eight of us. Maybe we just rent the two boats and split it however many ways and run the boats back and forth a few times. I would be cool with taking rotations fishing and sight seeing in the boats. Just my opinion. What does everyone else think?

I like that idea. We could just get one canoe and one motor boat and split it evenly between everyone who is coming and wants to use it.

If everyone votes to go ahead with the idea then I say reserve the two boats so we have a lock on them.

I remember back to the discussion at the Milton about locations, and that it was important to some of our members of the distaff side that we go to a place that has toilets. Do the camp spots we are talking about have facilities, or are we going to have to "rough it?" Not that I mind, of course, I can make like a bear.

If you hike down the Ross Dam Trail you can walk across the dam to get over to the Ross Lake Resort. I didn't mean to hike all the way to the site you're planning on camping in.

I've been doing some reading to figure out the whole boat/ferry/truck ride stuff. I found that there is a 35-car parking area near mp 134 on hwy 20, which is where the Ross Dam trail head is. The trail goes down to the dam, and over to the resort. Interesting to me though, is that the trail continues up to the Big Beaver camp (still need to verify 100%) if that is where we are still planning to camp, and its only 6 miles of easy level walking. For comparison, Mt Si in North Bend is 8 miles round trip with 3600 ft elevation gain (much more difficult). Should only take about 90 minutes to hike to the camp site. I don't *have* to do this, but if anyone else is interested, come with me since you're only bringing what you can carry anyway. I'll still pitch in for the boats.

Also, I read here that a few miles up the creek from the camp is old growth forest with trees "over 15 feet in diameter and 1,000 years old". To me, that is must see..

OK! I put one motorboat and one canoe on my credit card for the trip. I figure we can make a couple of trips back and forth from the campsite to get everyone where they need to go, that way we can split the cost of the boats up as much as possible and everyone will have a chance to fish or paddle around as much as they want. Please bring cash with you to pay for a portion of the boat. Somebody who is good at math can work out the details. Right now its looking like $55 per person for the boats, but if more people get in on it this will shrink. There are no ATMs at the resort, so bring cash. Don't F me in the A. :x

Let's go ahead and say that we will be camping at Big Beaver Creek campground. That will make it easy (relatively) for the folks who are walking in. I've been there before and I know it's beautiful.

Campsites: They have a group camp site at Big Beaver which can hold up to 15 people (I think), but it's definitely the least scenic site in the campground. There are also several campsites next to each other along the water.

Do we want to grab the big one, or do we want to grab several small ones? There are advantages to either. You need to get one back country permit per site.

Also, we need a headcount:

We all go camping at least once a year, but this is our first attempt at a canoe trip. We're always down to do more events, but often it's just hard to get organized on something this complicated.

Recent developments are making this a difficult, if not impossible proposition to attend. I thought I had this marked off for vacation time, but for some reason the computer did not register them. Now I have a depositon scheduled at 10:00 in the morning of the 20th, and an arbitration at 9:00 am on the 23rd. Usually, no big whoop; but the Friday dep is scheduled at a courthouse in Kittitas County or some such, miles south of Yakima near the Oregon border, and the Arb is in Spokane. I doubt I will be able to drive the 329 miles from Goldendale to the Ross Lake Resort Ferry by 3:00 on Friday. This puts me getting there by 8:30 in the am on Saturday- which means if I stay overnight in Seattle, an early rise. Then an early departure Sunday so I can make a flight to Spokane Sunday night for morning arb that Monday.

All in all, thinks are looking grim. This sucks. Not a dead issue quite yet, but I'm putting the paddles on the chest for another jolt.
