Embassy itself is secure, but the outer perimeter is surrounded by hostile Shia crowds.

Whatever they can hit?

Indeed. Expect retaliatory attacks on Saudi oil facilities, if not strikes against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. I also predict protests, possibly outright attacks, on US embassies in the region.

I'll be gassing up my vehicles after work today. The only winners in this scenario are going to be US shale oil producers.

But as far as oil, if Iran blocks the Straits of Hormuz - where 30% of the world's oil flows through on its way to Japan, China, and Europe, mostly - we could easily see $100 a barrel oil. What will that do to our transport industry, not to mention Amazon's business model?

If Iran blocked shipping for all countries I would expect China and India to get irritated. Which might solve our Iran problem. I don't expect all shipping or all oil to get blocked. I would expect a targeted blocking effort if they went this direction. But who knows? I'd be ok with them overreaching and getting slapped by another international player.

Remember at this point the US has a large onshore oil production capability through fracking. These producers can drill a well in less than 90 days and would turn on production very quickly. Oil prices of $100 will bring on another oil patch drilling boom and it will be sub $100 in short order in the US.
The fracking oil patch is ND,SD, WY, CO, MT, UT, TX, OK,NM, LA, MS, AL.

The US' key problem is refining capacity for gasoline & diesel.
That said a couple of refurbished refineries are coming back on line to address the IMO 2020 rule for low sulfur ship bunker fuel.

This is one such refinery in St Croix USVI.

The response honestly does not surprise me. When 750 US marines get moved someplace someone will get the bill.
https://taskandpurpose.com/us-deploying-troops

Iran did arrange the attack a US embassy albeit through intermediaries.
The real question is what did they expect to happen when they allowed the general outside of Iran for a trip to Iraq. I suspect they did not send him out to a target but who knows.
