Those are all interesting places. You should focus in on what interests you. No matter what your interest is (short of arctic exploring) you will be able to do it in one or all of those four cities.

Aside from preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse, what are your interests?

As a former San Diego resident, I'd recommend the Scripps Aquarium in La Jolla. Then a lunch of smoked turkey and black bean soup with a mesclun salad and a California Chardonnay on the balcony at George's At The Cove, 1250 Prospect Street La Jolla, CA 92037 (858) 454-4244 It is the epitome of California cuisine. Call ahead for reservation.

Also take the trolley DO NOT DRIVE YOUR RENTAL CAR to Tijuanna, Mexico . Safe enough in daylight. Enjoy genuine Mexican food, bring back an inexpansive leather jacket, some Mexican handicrafts and one bottle each of Kahula and pure vanilla extract.

No San Diego experience is complete without a visit to Rubio's Baja Grill, various locations, order the #5 combo.

The only one I know of that's worth visiting in the States is in New Orleans.

Layered clothing. Bring sweaters. Weather in San Francisco in September could be 80 degrees or it could be 55 degrees.

There's a couple state parks in/near Las Vegas if the Strip becomes overwhelming. (Altho it's worth seeing, just a question of how long you want to spend there.) UNLV has the Atomic Testing Museum.

I second the recomendation of Rubio's in San Diego - as long as the #5 combo includes the fish tacos which are fantastic. We also liked a morning walk down to the Seal Beach in San Diego.

And I've never had a bad trip to San Fransisco, ever. The Presidio has a couple forts with museums in it, don't know if they're WWII specific tho.

Salt Lake City is another place I've never had a bad trip to, it's beautiful country. The Wasatch National Forest is relatively close to get too, and the salt flats are worth a short trip just to see.

When we were in CA back in March, we went through the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley and got to walk through Air Force One. We also went through the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda and got to walk through Army One. Then we went to San Diego and toured the USS Midway and then had a mini-tour of Coronado and saw the Hotel Del Coronado.

In Los Angeles, there is the battleship USS Iowa (just opened). Up north in the Portland area there is the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, which not while not exclusively WW2, does have some WW2 aircraft as well as other cool stuff like an SR-71 and the Spruce Goose.

My first ship USS Midway (CV-41) Motto: Tip of the spear, Rejoinder: Shaft to follow, is now a floating museum in San Diego. I had rack 32 in the JO jungle.

Last I check the #5 combo was still two Fish Taco especiales.

It's our answer to a "Continental Breakfast", which to an American roughly translates to "not a real breakfast". So expect a buffet of eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, juice, fruit, coffee, tea (well, what passes for tea around here), cereal, pastries, probably pancakes, waffles and syrup. What else? Yogurt, bagels, jams, jellies, peanut butter and cream cheese. And depending on the region, omelets, chipped beef, sausage and gravy and grits.

You won't go hungry, but schedule an appointment with your cardiologist as soon as you get back.

san diego also has the safari park and sea world. try to find things that locals will do if you go to a beach try La Jolla Shores ( its a wildlife preserve so no fishing and stuff but they have kayak rentals and stuff and thats fun to look at the caves).

The Museum at the March Air Force Museum in Riverside county has a very nicely restored B17 that spent time in England...

In Utah there are any number of national parks and monuments to visit. NPS.gov will have all sorts of places that you can visit if you have any interest in historic sites or outdoor wonders.

Whatever you do, don't stop in Stockton. Not even to take a leak. I'm serious, I'm from there and it was bad when I left. I hear it's like a war zone in some parts now. I wish it weren't the case but it is. Not that you'd go there intentionally but the two main freeways in Cali pass through it. The rest of Cali. is nice though. Don't let my warning discourage you.
