I think there are a lot of benefits to something of this type...

1 - Nothing that will burst/leak if it freezes and thaws a few times

2 - Calorie-heavy, yet lightweight

3 - Requires a stove, fuel, and water to boil

While it may not be as convenient as an MRE, it's well thought out for the climate. Most cold-ass places have plenty of snow/ice you can melt and boil for food prep, rather than carry water with you(8#/gal). So far, I endorse JetBoil as a companion cooker, it works great in the cold, and fuel is lightweight and used efficiently 8-)

If storing this in a car over winter, SmartWater could be handy, too. The bottles freeze and stretch, but don't burst!

Drum has the cold weather/LRP stuff. we used to get them all the time. They are a lot lighter and easier to carry around. Your unit probably just won't get them because of the cost. If you don't really need them, they'd rather feed you the cheaper stuff.
