"Swiss Army Knife"-ing Your BOV

Postby btsbarton » Fri Aug 17, 2012 7:18 pm

What sorts of unique gadgets do you guys have on your rig to increase it's utility?

Here are some ideas Ive seen done before:

-Weldernator(On-Board/Underhood Welder Made From Old Alternator)

Image

-On Board Air From Old York A/C Compressor
http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/yorkair.html
Image

-Hand Throttle Control(Used to set idle speed for welder or air compressor, but could have other uses, especially if you have a power take off.)

-Water Tank and/or Compressed Air Tank Rear Bumper

I have seen and been exposed to all of those (in some form or another) other than the rear bumper tank.

While the rear bumper is a novel idea, it kinda defeats the purpose of the bumper IMO. If you smack it on something, you just ruptured it.

There is a guy on here that has an onboard aircompressor for his low rider. I have seen the welders before on offroad vehicles.

Those are a few good ideas.

But in reality how often are you ramming things with your rear bumper? As long as its made of reasonably thick gauge steel(1/8" or thicker) it should be sturdy enough for light bumps.

And if youve got an onboard welder, just weld it back togther

I think his point was that someone else rear-ending you would fuck the bumper. Welding it back on the spot wouldn't inspire confidence for me.

The bumper is a nice start. Box in the whole frame and make that your air tank, it's a common minitrucker thing. That's MINITRUCKER, not lowrider

(yes, that's me with the other onboard air and tools.)

How does that hold up to a collision? Any added insurance problems?

Sorry. I am an old school muscle car guy that started playing with imports.

I still just consider them all hot rods, but I am aware that terminology is all wrong. ;)

I have a `67 New Yorker, a `90 Celica, an `88 S10 and a `00 Explorer. I don't know where I belong anymore. But I do know that I dream about a `66 Cyclone GT when I close my eyes at night...

Nothing I own is stock. I can't keep from tinkering with stuff, which leads to breaking it, which leads to tinkering some more...

something also to think about is having a generator instead of an alternator or having both. They may not work as well as an alternator for charging but you can run the vehicle without a battery ( something you can't do with an alternator) .
I am thinking about putting in my jeep two large truck batteries and a normal jeep battery and hook the big truck batteries to the alternator and have the jeep battery run off the generator and getting an invert-er so i can run stuff off two batteries and charge them if i need too ( i am thinking maybe an air compress and also a welder).
but this is an idea i am just toying with.

I haven't heard anything about insurance with the air-tank frames. As for collisions, Haven't seen the results of that either, but I assume it's just a loud pop.

Here's a how to (sorta)

With the right Attatchements, and Old Landrover with Power takeoffs can run the whole of a small holding. Plow, Sow, Reap, Thresh. It can all be done, though the power take offs are notoriously dangerous. I recall in my early childhood how strong the 'NEVER PUT YOUR ARM NEAR!' instruction was. The versatile nature of the set up means safety barriers aren't present.

Cant belive I forgot about PTO's! Yeah they can definitely add utility to your rig with attachments: winches, generators, pulleys, the list goes on...Unfortunately not many transfer cases have outputs for them.

I also just remembered Ive seen this done before: its a pair of vise-jaws mounted on a platform that slides into your hitch receiver. Ive also seen them bolted to bumpers made of heavy gauge steel, usually on work trucks.

I went with a Northern Industries (Northern Tool) Mig135 wirefeed welder. The Mig Wirefeed seemed to be the most idiot proof.
