Tacoma 4x4 4cyl, how to carry extra fuel?

Postby RatDrall » Mon Jul 16, 2012 9:49 am

I picked one up recently, extended cab with suicide doors, 4x4, 4 cylinder motor and automatic transmission. Since breaking it in I'm getting 23-25 mpg. With 17 gallons I'm getting 400 or so miles on a tank, and with my 2 mile commute I've had to fill up about once every 5 weeks or so.

My last vehicle was a Corolla XRS, which had a 9600 rpm limit (Lotus Elise motor  ) and a 6 spd, so the 4 cylinder truck is a different experience. It's bizarre accelerating up to speed and staying below 2500 rpms the whole time.

My current question is: What kind of gas cans should I use, to store in the garage, that could be thrown in the bed during an emergency for extra range? I'd like to have 15-20 gallons available. How would I secure the cans, just tie them to the tiedowns in the bed?

It's a shame that you had to waste so much time using the search function on things that have never, ever, been discussed here.

I've never set foot in this section before, so I had no idea if it has or hasn't been discussed. Maybe I should go back to the bugout gear, survival techniques, edged weapons, firearms, other gear, etc. forums where we endlessly discuss the same things over and over again?

At least my thread serves to give the socially challenged a chance to feed their interwebz ego and vent on the noob...

Yes it does, thanks!

FWIW, I have 25 gals in blitz cans that I dump into the truck and refill every 3 mos. I have a hard cover over the bed of my truck and a rack mounted on that. When I go camping or on a long trip, the top rack is where they go, covered in a tarp. That way I don't have to pull out other gear to get to them.

LOL
Searching the site using the embedded tool will yield zip for "gas can"

OTOH, if you use :Jerry can' you get

Search found 143 matches
Search term used: +jerry +can +storage

Often times it's not the question, but how you ask it.

As to your question, before buying any storage vessel - ensure that is has a matching rack for storage.
Check local laws for type of cans that are 'legal and what restrictions may be in place for storage inside your house - if the garage is attached.

We've had several homes burn down due to bad choices in storage of gasoline inside of a garage.

Storing gasoline obviously is dangerous. I would suggest that you not store the fuel in the garage but rather buy a cheap storage box or shed and store the gasoline in your back yard or outside away from the house. Something simple and cheap like this would work well.

The absolute best storage device is a 55 gallon metal drum but that clearly has limitations, not the least of which is that full it weighs about 450 lbs.

Personally I use simple 5 gallon plastic jugs and rotate the fuel inside every 60 days or so to avoid the added hassle and expense of stabilizer. once a month I simply add the older fuel to my gas tank and bring the jug or jugs to the station to refill them. I label the jugs with the date and use the oldest jug first.

You really do not want to carry fuel inside vehicle. If you have a roof rack simply tie on the roof rack. This is the easiest and safest route. The next best route IMO is to carry the fuel on a trailer hitch rack. Obviously since you have a PU truck you can simply tie them inside the bed.

My $.02.

Actually the 2ZZGE is a Toyota engine. Not Lotus. It was traditionally a Celica engine, used in the GT-S. The 1ZZFE was used in the base model Corolla, Celica and MR-S.

The 2ZZGE made 190HP and had an 8600 Rev Limit. It was available in the Lotus Elise and Exige in the NADM, it was offered with other engines in Europe. The engine was also available as you mentioned in the Corolla XRS and Matrix in a detuned version only putting out around 170HP.

Fuel cans are a fine solution, kept away from your house, rotated often.

A not cheap and always there option would be a toolbox auxiliary tank. They run several hundred dollars, but will provide you with more than one refill. Simply run your truck off of that, and fill it up as needed. Having that much fuel, such a short daily commute, combined with good fuel mileage will force you to use stabilizer, but you'll have all the fuel you need without the worry of forgetting to grab your cans in an emergency.

Cons:
- added weight, which will decrease fuel economy
- need for fuel stabilizer, which adds cost
- less room in the bed for other gear

I, personally would go with a bumper or rack mounted transport solution so as not to waste precious bed space.
