New Project Vehicle

Postby BigRix » Tue May 15, 2012 8:40 am

I just did some horse trading and picked up a basket case M1009 CUCV that is in the middle of a manual transmission swap. Plans are to get it together and work out the bugs then move on to rust control and 1 ton axles.

That is if the wife doesn't kill me first.

I think it will be an awesome trail rig.

Decided to find a Turbo 400 to put back in so I sourced a flexplate and some new batteries.

Here is a little video that shows the first attempt at starting it.

I'm curious... What's that comms unit I saw on the dash in the video?

While I whimper a little over every scratch and dent in a nice vehicle, it's nice to have a little something that'll move itself around in the rough, without any
worry about scratching the paint.
Part of the reason I sold my '87 Blazer. It was far too nice, and I had a serious mental block against taking it off road.
Wouldn't it be great if all wars could be fought just by the assholes who started them?

Some more horse tradeing and I now have a TH400 with 208 transfer case.

Image

The owner said it had no reverse before he pulled it out and junked the truck. Pulled it apart and it looked great except for the low/reverse band and some worn thrust washers.

Image

Also got 3/4 ton axles from the same guy. 14 bolt and 8 lug 10 bolt both with 4.10 gears.

Image

I have only owned it for one week so far and progress is good.

Turns out the trans case had been welded and then cracked again. No dice.

Image

Image

The transfer case was blown up and it looks like someone put it in reverse and stood on the gas. Twisting the output shaft and smoking the low/reverse band.

And then I discovered that the output shaft was modified by welding a 27 spline TH700r4 shaft the the original shaft. So its not the right t case for my truck either.

Image

Fortunately the guy I bought it from is giving me some money back and I was able to find another transmission case and I have the correct t case, so not all is lost.

Trans is in after chasing down the correct crossmember and various other components. Drive it home last night and it is loud and has a bad death wobble. Loose ball joint is the main culprit. Going to run it iver to the exhaust shop to see what they can do with it.Image

The wife and daughters were not impressed but they put up with my toys.

Hope to get the mechanicals sorted soon so I can start on the body work.

Put on a full exhaust and did some front end work. Driving much better.

Snapped a quick pic out front of the local surplus store. Stopped in to pick up an ammo can to use for a center console.

Tackled my first body work. Rusted out tailgate.

Image

Took the die grinder to it and the cut myself a patch.

Image

A couple hours later and it's ready for some bondo. Quite tedious but also therapeutic.

Image

Now to order some rockers and rear patch panels.

New Project Vehicle

Postby BigRix » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:07 pm

Had a couple starting problems that indicated the starter was almost dead. Finding jump starting to be a pain with the 24 volt system, I decided now was the time to convert to 12 volt. A new gear reduction starter originally for a later model 6.5 and one longer battery cable and I was good to go. Much more dependable now.

Still need to tackle the rust and all the squeaks and tire vibrations and the speedo reads low and on and on.

Did I mention how much I love this truck.
