96 jeep grand cherokee horn going off

Postby ProstheticWeasel » Mon Dec 19, 2011 7:37 pm

Got a call from my girlfriend at lunch today and she said our jeep was in the parking lot blasting the horn continuously. She tried to turn off the alarm and start it but it would start and run for a few seconds then turn off. So I am suspecting the alarm system went haywire. It did not do the honk honk alarm though like it normally would if it went off. Just a continuous tone and REALLY loud.

I disconnected the battery for a bit and when I reconnected it it was all back to normal. But now the horn does not work. I can wire a button in for that if I need to so I don't really care about the horn.

A google came up with some issues with the headlight set to automatic triggering the alarm in some cases. So I can give that a try.

Anyone seen a problem like that? My first thought was to disable the alarm system but it is probably hard to do.

I had a problem like that with an old Dodge Omni. Horn started to blow in the middle of the night. Turned out to be a relay on the wire from the horn button to the horn. I didn't have any alarms or anything on that car, so maybe your problem isn't that simple.
Good luck.

If its the alarm causing the issue, remove the driver side door panel, in the bundle will be a purple wire with yellow stripe, if you cut it, and ground the side coming in from the cabin you will disarm the alarm. Your keyless and such will still function if you have it, just won't have the alarm active, but seriously the factory alarm isn't stopping someone from stealing it anyways lol

I suspect the alarm may have fried itself. After that incident the alarm did not seem to function as it did. the key fob would lock and unlock the door but the lights did not flash and it did not go beep beep. The horn is burned out though so that may be all it is.

Either way I sold it and moved to Iowa for a new job.

If anyone in the Des Moines area knows of a good vehicle for sale let me know. I am in the market.

That seems like a pretty radical solution to the problem.

At the very least, you're far enough away now that if the horn goes off again it won't bother you.
