I have had a lump on the base of my right ring finger for a couple months. After some careful interwebz research, it seems as though I have a ganglion cyst. I would just use my health insurance and go see the doctor...but, well, I don't have any because I was laid off in January. :(

It doesn't really bother me except when I'm lifting/carrying heavy stuff and it rubs against it. Does anyone know a home remedy/treatment? Does the "smash it with a book" method work? It didn't really bug me too much until last week when I was taking my concealed handgun class. When it made it difficult to grip my pistol, that's when I really started to get annoyed with it.

Um, I know you probably don't want to hear this, but, see a doctor.

While the internet is a good source of information, it is not a doctor and should not be used to self-diagnose. You could be wrong. Fatally wrong if it was say, a cancerous tumor. Hopefully, it's not, but to say that it's a cyst of any type without a doctor checking it is not a good idea.

Maybe someone can recommend a doctor or clinic to go to.

I've got one on my right wrist. It aches in certain weather, and limits my range of motion, but... Ehh.

My doctor told me not to hit it with a book, as doing so can cause damage to the rest of your hand. I believe that there are several treatments they can do, that have varying levels of invasiveness (but that also tend to allow the cyst to grow back, more or less in proportion with how simple the procedure is).

That's hilarious I got the same advice from my family doctor about 15 years ago, I also have one in my wrist. I tried it, did nothing but hurt like a bitch. I still have it...

They must have taught that technique in med school?

Aka, a bible cyst, because, theoretically, if you hit it hard enough with a heavy book it will go away.

Shrapnel wins.

The idea of it being cancerous is exceedingly rare, and the idea of it being a ganglion cyst is exceedingly common. The Streets are a motherfucker these days. I wouldn't go to a doctor for it if I didn't have to. Times are tough. Do what you gotta do.

With that said, ganglions are a bitch because the treatments are usually not permanent. Smacking them will make them go away temporarily (or break your hand if they're tough and you hit it wrong). Draining it will make it go away temporarily as well. The problem is that these cysts tend to wrap around little carpal bones and wind through little hand joints. It's not just a ball of (usually) synovial fluid. It's more like a snake's head on the surface and the body winds all throughout God knows what.

The cure is to have the whole thing cut out. I'm talking dissected out by a surgeon that drives something that costs more than your house, and will charge you a shitload to put on those 1500-dollar custom jeweler's loops and open the bones of your hand up for an hour or so dissect out the cyst from every nook and cranny.

Just scanned the Wikipedia entry and I can verify that it's accurate for what I know.

I could drain it for you, but it'll probably come back. Not to mention that I'm not a doctor and you'd be having a medical procedure performed on you by an anonymous internet ClayMation chicken with an assault rifle. While that may be the very near future of health care in this country, there's probably no need for you to go there now.

I have them bilaterally on my wrist but they really dont cause much problems any more....when I was in high school the one on my left hand "flared up" to the point that I but it up against the cinder block wall and punched it as hard as I could......

I would not recommend this...or any variation of hitting it as I broke 3 bones in the process and the bump is still there....

Interesting. Had a cyst a while back. Don't know if it's the same kind or not. The doctor told me to just put antibiotic ointment from the pharmacy on it and when I did, it was gone within a week. Couldn't hurt if you did that, I wouldn't think.

Different kind of cyst. A ganglion cyst is caused by the joint capsule kind of bulging out. The one that I suspect you had was a completely different beast.

I had one on my wrist as a kid. Doctor stuck a big needle in it and drew out a clear, viscous fluid, and it went away. It came back again a year or so later and I lived with it for a couple of years and then one day it spread out and went away, and never came back. I think I may have accidentally whacked my wrist on my bedpost the night before, right on the cyst. I'm not sure.

I had one on my wrist and I did use the "hit it with a book" method. To my surprise, it worked, but this is AFTER I saw a Dr. who told me what it was.

You really need to know for sure what you're dealing with before deciding on a treatment.

Good call guys. I'm not gonna mess with it until I have insurance again and can see a doctor.

It hurts today, because I've been messing with it lately. :-(

Probably safer than my suggestion of "John Dillinger going to work on it with a ball-peen hammer".

Seriously, dude. See a doctor.

you should try homeopathy to have the cyst removed. I'm an 8th grade classical pianist and recently had a ganglion cyst. the hand specialist said i'd need surgery to have it removed and may need reconstructive surgery on my wrist for possible ligament damage and my wrist would never be the same again! so i got my mom's homeopathist friend to mix me up some Ruta-Graveolens and after 3 days the cyst was gone! i have pics of before and after if you're interested. but if homeopathy can fix a cyst that doctors say should be removed. I'm just trying to help those as much as possible who have a cyst cause i know how painful it can be in the wrist. the pain went away after 2 days.

The 'Ruta-Graveolens' was applied topically? I would like to see the pictures if you don't mind. This is interesting...

Thanks in advance!

Hello vlad_tepes!

no it's not applied topically. Ruta-Graveolens is used inside the mixture, it's the energy of the plant that they put in it. And then they mix it with brandy and water for preservation. The homeopathy I use u actually put under your tongue - 5 drops, 3 times a day!

Here's links to the before and after pics - the first pic is my first day on the homeopathy remedy, and the 2nd pic is my 3rd day on the remedy.

http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... G_0535.jpg

http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... G_0617.jpg

The specialist said i'd need an MRI scan ($570!!!) to see if there's ligament damage, which he thought there would be. I've been on the drops for 9 days now. After the 2nd day there was no pain anymore. and now my wrist looks back to normal..however, im still taking the drops for the ligament problems. see, Ruta-Graveolens will actually fix the ligament damage as well! cheaper and natural option...$20 as opposed to $1800 for the cyst removal operation and thousands more $$$ if i had reconstructive surgery on my wrist for the ligament?? no way! surgery should be the last resort if all else fails. Homeopathy works on most people, not on others though.

Golly gee. I can't imagine why that might be the case.

By the way, are pianists ranked in grades, or something? Like, you know, having a fifth grade/degree black belt, but in pianos instead?

I think that if people don't believe 100% in the therapy/treatment that they're receiving, their body will reject it and it won't work.

hehe! yes, it's ranked from 1st grade to 8th grade. normally people will start 1st grade when they're between 6 and 8. Of course, you can start from wherever you feel comfortable from playing. I started playing 5th grade when I was 17, I didn't actually start from grade 1 since it was boring. It only took me 2 years to get to 8th grade level, and from there I've been practicing at 8th grade and I'm now 23. But because of the cyst, my practice has been on-again-off-again. When the cyst is on the top side of the wrist, it's called a dorsal ganglion, which is what I had...and they start out very small to the point that u can't see them and it's very painful - i often wondered why it was painful and doctors couldn't figure it out until it got to the full blown cyst stage. but in terms of piano, anyone can learn at any age (except when you're a lot older as you're hands actually need to learn to grow into the piano technique).

If you are trying to be very cheap you might ask around at your local primary care clinic who people would recommend for a problem like that. Not all doctors/PAs/nurse practitioners will give you the same treatment for the same diagnosis. For example, maybe Dr. Bob usually just refers people to expensive specialists, but Dr. Mary has a lot of experience in sports medicine stuff and is comfortable draining the cyst right there in the clinic.

Dunno who you could ask, maybe people in the waiting room or the receptionist if you don't mind being a little annoying. You could get lucky and get some good intel. Maybe there's even a "rate-a-doctor" thing on the internet; I've heard of those.
