Need a Portable Radio

Post by Stercutus » Wed Mar 13, 2019 2:07 pm

I need recommendations on a portable radio for back country use. I plan to carry it with me when on the ATV and set it up for use when encamped.

Requirements:
- Rugged and weatherproof
- Multiband with AM/FM/SW/Weather
- 12V chargeable (or uses batteries that can be)
- Excellent quality
- Smaller than 8"X6"X16", smaller better

Please recommend only stuff you have experience with.
You go 'round and around it
You go over and under

Under $150. But if something is really stunning at $200, I'd likely spend it.

ATS-505
Coverage includes longwave from 153 - 279 kHz, AM from 520 - 1710 kHz, shortwave solid from 1711 - 29999 kHz and FM 87.5 - 108 MHz (stereo to earphone jack). The backlit display can show either the frequency or the time (12 or 24 hour format)
Cost - depends, as you will be looking for NOS
Otherwise, the ATS-405 and no SSB

TUCSON PL-880 as above
about $160

The PL-660
about $130.

Great radio, but not very weatherproof from what I recall.

This one isn't weatherproof either, but is still a decent radio:

It's looking like a unicorn.

I'm starting to lean towards a job site radio with an aux input for a SW tuner.

Option 2 might be a marine radio.

If you're willing to up the price a bit and get a ham license it would open up other options, but that's not for everyone. Truth be told, I think I'd go with one of the two radios we've suggested, TacAir and I, and put it in a double layer of plastic bags, or a decent dry sack.

I was going to suggest a contractor radio and a separate SW/ham radio.

And I forgot about the Yaesu VX-8R. Might want to give that a look. But I have no personal experience with it.

If you decide to go that route I would look for some additional antennas too. And extra batteries.

Another option for cheaper. And this one is not actually discontinued.

And again, I do NOT have experience with these Yaesus. But LOTS of other people have, and their experiences are widely posted online. Basically, the radios are tough, effective, but you may want to get your son to program the things.

How does this one stack up to the one posted?

They appear quite similar.

Not bad from what I can see. A little pricey and not weatherproof but probably good enough for your needs inside a plastic bag.
