BAOFENG UV-3R+ questions

Postby Regulator » Thu Jul 12, 2012 7:11 pm

Ok so I bought one of these after reading the $100 BORK thread that's now locked. I'd like to listen in on my local traffic and decide whether I want to learn more and pursue this interest. Now I am familiar with radios and electronics a bit but I don't know anything about HAM. I have my software loaded, it will talk to the radio, the radio works and picks up stations from 88 to 108 but I have no idea how to recieve an actual HAM freq.

Here's what I'd like to recieve and any pointers would be much appreciated.

The controller is an S-Com 7K. The repeater runs 10 watts output to a commercial antenna at 110 feet. The input frequency is 147.855 MHz, and the output frequency is 147.255 MHz. The repeater is an open repeater, and may be accessed by any properly-licensed amateur.

147.255 + open 88.5, autopatch, wx net

So what do I need to put into all these cute little boxes on this software? Thanks :D

Set the "output" freq to your "RX" in the software and the "input" freq as your "TX". The "PL" is what you set for CTCSS or Tone. You only need to be concerned with the tone if you want to transmit or block out other repeaters or interference.

I probably don't need to tell you that you can't transmit on those repeaters until you have a ham license :words: blah blah blah but nothing wrong with monitoring. Hopefully you have more to listen to in your area than we do here. Our repeaters are dead as a door nail.

For the other stuff (Public safety et al)
http://www.mokanscan.net/main/ lets you search based on area.

Kansas is kinda funny what with KC dominating the AO.

Good luck, it's a fun hobby.

Thanks for the info. I was able to listen in on the local net the other night. The local guys chat evry Tue and Thur night around here. I am used to transmitting and recieving on the same freq so the set up on this little radio was a bit different. And I had to turn my squelch all the way off which I thought was unusual since this is local radio traffic. Anyrate, I found them and listened in.

I'll check out the mokanscan info more in depth as well. There is definately a bit of a learning curve with this but I always like to expand my knowledge base. So thanks again guys :D
