I generally have a carton or two on hand. If the SHTF, I'll probably finish off what I have (rationing myself), and if replacements are not available, I'll quit. The first few days will be hell. That would be a bad time to be a zombie and come across me. After that, I would be fine.

Just a comment on growing your own. I've heard historical / archaeological references to pre-contact tobacco horticulture as far north as the Red Deer River valley in Alberta. That's hardiness zone 3a, so there should be strains that will grow just about anywhere in the states. Early horticultural practices were fit into the annual round and were minimally labour intensive, basically clear and plant in the spring, harvest in the fall.
Also, a lot of plants have been used to stretch tobacco, the most common up here being bearberry. I expect this practice would make a comeback quick in the event of any sort of scarcity. Some people still do it now.

I'm surprised how many of you smoke pipes... it's very relaxing. I would love to have the gratification of growing my own tobacco. I guess it's time to start doing a little research.

Well I switched over to a pipe a week or so ago.

If nothing else I can make a bag (1.5 oz) last a week or week and a half. Sure as the hell beats 2 packs every three days.

Getting me some funny looks at work, but most people just sorta laugh, and ask if we have to do any sort of investigation that I smoke the pipe during it to speed things along.

Like I said, really just giving pipes a serious shot so still a newb at em.

But I did find some decent articles online about how to pack it. I get Captain Black tobacco, its ok I guess, though I guess its sorta "low tier"

Just get a pipe, pipe nail, pipe cleaners, extra filters/little cardboard tube thingies (if your pipe needs em, had no idea one was in mine till I took it apart to clean) umm figure someway to transport all of em, I use a pouch that came with a pair of ESS sunglasses.

I also just use a Bic to light it, used someones Zippo (with pipe top on it) and was helluva easier, but keep forgetting to buy one...

I tried my hand at growing a few tobacco plants several years ago. I live in an outskirt, suburb type area - no tobacco growers around here. I thought my plants would be safe or at least little bothered by tobacco worms. Wrong! Those bastards come out of nowhere, overnight and with a helluva appetite! I didn`t want to spray very much poison so I just picked most of them off. I managed to save a couple of plants worth of tobacco and hung it up in the garage forever. Tried smoking some after it had dried. It pretty much sucked. Too in love with my cowboy killers I guess. If I ever try this again I`m going to do some more study first.

growing tobacco for your own consumption shouldn't be too big of a hassle.

try raising acres of it.

for cigarettes, burley tobacco is used. dipping and chewing tobaccos are commonly air cured and "flue" (fire) cured dark tobaccos. 2 good plants of burley should yield at LEAST a pound of leaf when cured. more when soil nutrients and Ph are correct.

there are lots of different varities available, but they dont have a "marlboro light" variety. (someone asked me this one time) the potence of the smoke comes from the stalk position of the leaf. the lower the leaf on the plant, the less "harsh" of the smoke. the lower leaves were commonly used as a "filler" tobacco from what I understand. they're light and fluffy leaves when fully cured. the "tips" of the plant, or the upper leaves have a heavier content of nicotine.

when air curing, the plants need to be hung upside down, outdoors in a covered area. (porch, shed, open carport, etc) when the stems of the leaves are no longer "fat" and are depleted of their moisture, the leaf is cured and needs to be removed from the stalk. the stems will have a white color if they've still got some moisture in them.

the tobacco will draw moisture from the atmosphere, resulting in an occurance called "case". when tobacco comes into "case" its very pliable. this happens usually during a foggy morning or rain. if it's not in "case" it's "rattly". meaning, when you shake the stalk, it will rattle.

the dryer the leaf, the better it will burn in a pipe or roll. if it's too wet, you'll have to constantly light it.

i have no idea on how the "processing" works. I just raised it, housed it, stripped it, hauled it to market and sold it. hard to believe a pack of smokes is around $5 a pack and we kick and scream to get 1.75 per POUND during sale time.

i'm no expert, but from my experience, that is the information i gathered.

Something an old timer told me was wild sagebrush to replace tobacco. Wouldn't recommend using it as dip, but if it is dried until the right moisture, it keeps well in an old skoal can. smoke it in my briar and corncob pipe all the time.

Seriously? How does that work out for you? Do you specifically need a briar and corncob pipe or can it be anything?

It actually can be smoked in most stuff except for hookahs maybe. It kinda gives me a relaxed but focused feeling, can make you salivate a lot though. All i have smoked it out of is my two pipes and cigs i made with it

I'm not overly concerned with smokes. If you have played Fallout 3 you know there will be thousands of packs of smokes just laying around everywhere for the taking. [Sarcasm]

Seriously though, I'll likely smoke what I have, scavenge for more, and do without when I can't find any.

Yeah I've thought about it. I dip like mad (Thanks Marine Corps)! I figure I need to quit and hopefully I will before the PAW. But if not I'll either quit then because I have to or I do live in NC too so the stuff grows everywhere...
Dried tobacco even old crusty smokes can be freshened up buy putting it in a jar with a wet paper towel. And I have a cool english made frontier style clay pipe to stick in my hat band. Plus my dad used to smoke pipe most of my young life so he still has plenty of them lying around w/filters and cleaners. Plenty of natural weeds and herbs grow around here that can be smoked too(not what your thinking!).
It's not the nicotine for me it's more of a oral fixation. Same reason I used to be quit the cigar afficionado when I was younger. Sometimes I'd just chew on them instead of smoking them. Or smoke them in Iraq to keep the damn bugs out of my nose. So if the PAW helps me break the vice than all the better. I could quit and not freak out, I figure they'll be plenty to do to keep my mind busy when the SHTF.

I am a cigar smoker myself (shut up) and the little lady smokes cigarettes. Now at least she smokes the good kinds, like American spirits which don't smell at all and lack that Marlboro funk afterwards I've been giving serious consideration to switching her to a pipe (indoors) to save money. First off, she's awesome to even consider this but I am getting tired of spending 150-200 bucks a month in just cigs. Even my cigars are not that expensive and if need be I can give those up.

Now my question to you all, what would you recommend for a pipe for some one who is used to smoking lights. She likes American Spirit lights and I am concerned the loose tobacco will be to harsh for her. Any thoughts? Links? Posts?

I look forward to your manly responses.

I don't smoke but I dip like a fiend, nothing better to keep one going on ruck marches or late nights than nicotine and hate I always say.

That said, I Do keep 2 packs of smokes (one menthol and the other regular) in my closet vacuum packed just in case, because nothing says "I'm not going to shoot you in the back unless you do somehting retarded" like offering someone a smoke.

That said a can of open dip seems to dry out in a little over a week, making it less palatable but still usable. I've never noticed a expiration date on unopened cans... mayhaps I should stock up :?

One thing to consider if the SHTF is savings your buts and rolling whatever you can pull out from in front of the filter (works for the homeless). This in mind it may be a good idea to buy some rolling papers, they never go bad. Also an option to stretch what you have/find may be to mix your tobacco with cloves (guhh I know ) or other burnables, Ive even heard of tea being used to cut tobacco when times were lean.

I dipped a tin a day for almost 30 years. Used Red Man also. One day I woke up and realized how bad that shit was for my health. I threw it all away and haven't touched it in almost 2 years now. I feel much better because my BP has dropped substantially.

I usually have an extra pack on hand (it is expensive, and I should quit), and hopefully that should get me to the undisclosed location. If you are prepping, it would not be a bad idea to go to a tobacco shop and buy a couple of pounds of "pipe" tobacco, and a case of papers. What i did is fill a couple of smaller mylar bags with tobacco, throw in some oxygen absorbers to shrink the bag (not enough to dry it out), then heat sealed the bag with an iron. I would probably quit smoking, or go to a cheaper homegrown "herbal" type weed personally, but I believe tobacco will be a hell of a barter item. Some addicts will probably trade away a lot of food and ammo for a chance to light up.

I hate starting a new thread for a simple question... So i will just jack this one.
Anyone have experience with the cig rolling machines? I have been wanting to start rolling my own as far as i can tell you just need the rolling machine, tubes, and tobacco is that right? And I was looking at the Top-O-Matic machine anyone have any experience with them?
