Kelly Kettle

Also known as the storm kettle, I'd recommend this in lieu of propane cookers any day.

Can be used for cooking and boiling water, burns just about anything including furniture pieces very efficiently, fast, light and never runs out.

I don't like using aluminum if I don't have to. Good design, poor choice in materials.

Lee Valley Hardware, or it may have been Veritas used to offer those in stainless. They may still do. I think I'll stick with ye olde Dakota pit fire or perhaps a billy stove.

Edit:
The Lee Valley version is aluminum. $79 dollars for the small size and $99 dollars for the large.

Huh. Didn't know they're made in stainless now too. To bad I'm broke or I'd do a write up.

Another item along the same line:

Thermette

http://www.thermette.com/index.htm

Differences from kelly kettle:
made of copper for better heat conduction, corrosion resistance, and anti-microbial properties.
not as nice looking as the kelly kettle
Similarities
heavy.
expensive.

I think they're a really good idea, but wouldn't want to carry one. IMHO these types of wood burners are the ultimate expression of the wood burning cookers.
All the best!

yeah, I think these are a great design, and more satisfying then hooking up a fuel bottle, but for me even if they don't weigh a ton they'd just take up way to much pack space. think a wood-gas stove or an alcohol burner is more space/weight efficient if less awesome.

I have the mid sized model myself, they really weigh very little, less than a couple of propane tanks plus burner easily. Another thing about them, again related to weight, they are largely made up of empty space. You can wrap up other gear and hide it in the chimney or the fire base when its not being used, and the big cork means you can carry fresh water with you inside the kettle. The only complaint I would have is that they clank a bit when you move around, unless you have the stuff sack tied down firmly.

What I do is fill up a platypus bag with a cloth over the top to catch the larger debris, filter water from that through an Aquamira Frontier Pro Filter with the top popped off straight into the kettle, then boil for a few minutes (its really fast!), and away you go.

If you want to keep spending on your cooking (easily doubles as a hobo stove) and boiling needs outdoor, I guess maybe gas or similar fuel sources will do the job, until you run out of your weeks supply, although they might be suitable if you don't plan on being away from the world for longer than a few days. With this baby you can keep hot water and food going for years or decades, using only wood or twigs, even paper. Trapped in your house with no fuel? No problem, hack up a chair and you're set for a couple of weeks, plus you don't risk burning the house down as the fire is contained if you don't mind a bit of soot on the roof.

I actually kind of like the damn thing. I saw it for the first time watching a show regarding the history of Norwegian fishermen and have been intrigued ever since.

I got one as a gift from my in-laws; I never would have spent the money on one because I'm a tightwad. It works great, and I tend to take it car camping. But it's a bit bulky for backpacking IMO. When I win the lottery I'm going to get one of those stainless jobs.

Seems to big and bulky compared to any real benefits it may offer.

I just hang mine on the outside of the backpack, don't even notice its there, mostly. I guess it comes down to mid to long term benefits, this will be working just fine years after your gas fired stove has become landfill, not to mention you don't have to carry around highly flammable pressurised gas (which usually doesn't work in high wind or rainy conditions) when you are making good your escape.

First time I saw one was on this forum. Then I did a search on YT and found a few video reviews. I like it but I'll go along with what the guy that reviewed it said. It works well but you are kinda at the mercy of dealing with wet material if its been raining for a long period of time.

Thanks. It looks like they don't offer the full "kit" though. I guess I'm just going to have to order from overseas.

It would be interesting if there was an all stainless version.
If you check the Kellykettle website they sell extra fire bowls because the aluminum will warp after repeated use. Which means its still has no advantage over anything else and its bulky to boot. IMHO

Could be cool if someone decided to go completely stainless, a better sealing cap, more stabile design.

Those started out made in Australia and were awesome, once the idea took off production was shifted to china, the early production used lead solder. After that was fixed, there was still the question of using recycled copper. (Radiators/atom subs)

Well, on another site, an old hard core bush humper uses a coffee can.

That's all you need in the bush, an old coffee can, boil your unopened can meals in water.

I always wanted one of these but in stainless. Could be a good time when ice fishing. Toss it into the sled and maybe make some tea and get a little warmth at the same time. Gotta be better than just sitting on a bucket watching the tip ups. I would worry about exposing unopened cans to heat. Not sure what would happen but don't think it would be good. I wouldn't risk it.

Does the fire base for these attach in some way, such as the indentations you find on mixing bowls? It does not appear to be threaded in any way, and I am not sure I would like it if you just sit the kettle on top of it. It might get kicked over on accident and scatter embers everywhere - something that could quickly become a serious problem. Another reason I'd like to know this is because it would make the whole unit into an excellent fire bundle on top of carrying extra water as others have pointed out.

A second question I have concerning this item is the grill kit. Has anyone used one? I'd like to know if you could cook meat in them - particularly fowl. If it can handle rice I assume it could build up enough heat and pressure with the lid on that it'd be able to handle a dressed quail or smaller grouse.

I am probably going to pick one of these up, because it really beats my current percolator+pan setup coming in at a measly two pounds. If anything you could simply strap it to the outside of your bag - it looks like it'd work perfect with some cargo straps on an ALICE pack.
