I'd say Kabars snap in half way more consistently than anything from the Becker line, ESEE knives, Bark River, Fallkniven, and other properly designed knives that aren't over-appreciated relics.

It would be like comparing a Harley to a Honda Goldwing, and arguing that it is just as reliable - it isn't, even if a lot of people like them and use them more.

I've seen some of them other knives break too. Not as much as a Kabar ($60) or a Mora ($20 at worst) <<< but neither of them really break in the hands of experienced people much either. Took me 15 years to break my Kabar from batoning and that was while batoning incorrectly for 15 years. I don't even like Kabars that much anymore as I think they are too big and clunky.

You can hate all you want but rat-tailed tangs have been around for a long time and work well for many centuries from many cultures over many scenerios.

Also, I'm not calling you out on full tanged knives either. I got some. I'm just saying that full-tanged knives you are espousing are not some knife tech evolutionary point that makes all other non-full-tanged knives obsolete. I can see you have passion and that is good. Just no need to hate on something that don't need to be hated on.

Yup. Please do. Not doubting so much as curious. I've used my Ka-Bar since 1993 and have know many, many people who carried them as well. The chief complaint was the tip breaking off, usually from prying open an ammo can or crate.

I personally love my Cold Steel Recon Tanto and SOG Seal CFK's(combat fighting knife). The Cold Steel has a great rubberized grip that grips back. The blade is non-serrated(i prefer non-serrated blades)with a awesome tanto tip for excellent penetration. The backside of the blade is very thick making it very solid and sturdy. The Cold Steel holds an edge very well and also came with an excellent kydex sheath. My SOG Seal is also a very solid CFK, but I dont particularly like the handle. It grips decently but is a hard plactic that has a semi-knurled texture. The blade is serrated and has a great finish. It came with a very nice molle nylon sheath wth sharpening stone storage. I have attached both of them to my Camelbak M.U.L.E assault pack that i picked up at the PX while I was stationed in 29Palms. The Cold Steel is attached to the right srap of the pack and is positioned so that when worn it rests just below my right armpit. It is surprisingly very comfortable and very easy to access. On the left strap of the pack, I have attched a curved mini K-Bar that was originally an ankle knife in a nice pressure retention kydex sheath. I removed the ankle strap and slightly augmented the mount and it rests on the left side of my chest for quick easy access. The SOG Seal is attached to the backside of the pack via the molle system and is surprisingly easy to access. Eventually I would like to get an SOG Seal pup to go with the seal.

Whenever I see people post pics of Machete Knives as fighters, I both wholeheartedly agree that they are awesome, and also seriously doubt that anyone will happen to have that huge knife on them when they need to defend themselves. Unless Mad Max really happens. Then all bets are off.

On;y three of those were the actual USMC fighting knife pattern. Snapping at the handle usually indicates improper batonning, and breaking a knife by throwing it is not breaking a knife in normal use. Also, at least two of those knives were Becker knives, which goes counter to your original statement that Ka-Bar (and I'm assuming this includes the Ontario Knife Company models) knives break more consistently than Becker, Esee, etc.

Even Glocks break.

Also, on the knife breakage point, ya need to look at how many of these knives have been sold as compared to 1 or 2 breaking,,, the percentages of failure are astronomically small...

I would like to add that in at least one of the linked reports about breaking knives whilst batoning, the knife is at one hell of an angle. I'd love to have been there every time, but I can't, so I can't can't say whether it was technique, intentional misuse, age (I don't care what metal it is, you stike a piece of steel long enough and it will develop stress fractures,) or prior misuse (throwign said knife or using it as a prybar) or just being the one bad one in a lot of a few hundred thousand. I don't expect an SKS to dot he same things as my M4, and you shouldn't expect a USMC Fighting Knife (Ka-Bar) pattern knife to be the one-size fits all, but like the ALICE pack it's a decent starter that looks kind of cool and has a bit of heritage to it.

Hmm toaster oven tacos with frozen magaritas on the trail, pez for desert, not bad. Or you could add some throwing knives. Tough call.

Full and narrow tangs can both be done well, or done poorly, afecting durability.
