So I want an inexpensive knife...

Buy yourself a Mora.

Mora. Lots of Moras. Try different grip Moras. Different blades. Beat them. Work them. Break them. Make them weep. Then get more. Get a mora for you, your car, your bag, your dog. Try a Mora Scout, a Mora Robust, hell even one of those weird broom-knives they have.

Well, you didn't really say what you plan to use the knife for (other than the assumed "zombie killing" purpose) so it's a little hard to make specific recommendations. But for the price limit you mention, and for a solid general purpose survival and defense knife, I would seriously look at the Ka-Bar Mark 1.

Well made (and US made), great grip, versatile blade design and < $50.

I'm a big fan of knives under 50 bucks. Thats my usual benchmark in determining if something is a great value blade or pushing "steep".

Moras have already been talked about to death, but I love em. Get one and be converted.

I actually really like my glock field knife as far as "cheap" beaters go. It wont be winning any bushcraft contests, but it stabs, throws, digs, and open bottles like a champ. Once I reprofiled the edge, it can cut pretty well too! Less than $30 in most places.

Condor tool and knife makes some pretty awesome blades for under $50 bucks as well. I've been wanting a lochnessmuk since I first laid eyes on it.

That would be awesome, if it had a guard on it, especially a D guard.

Why do you want a guard?
