So I want an inexpensive knife...

Postby GOODdaysir » Mon Jul 09, 2012 10:24 am

Hey ZS, I've just gone knife crazy and I think that there is a gap in my arsenal. I currently have a small folder, (Bear grylls scout  ) a leatherman wingman ( ) and a cheapo M-tech fixed blade that I have had sharpened, now Im looking for something else bigger(I think) but also inexpensive and cool, I was looking at the Ka-Bar ZK series, and anything that is under 47.95ish, I really like the ZK just because its fun, but I havent seen any reviews on them, so I was hoping you guys could help out a bit, thanks GDS

Maybe a Mora, a Boker Highland Ranger, Cold Steel Kobun, Gerber Freeman, Cold steel Bushman. A bit Pricier is the Schrade SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife. (Note, I don't own all of these)

Mora knives are cool, and inexpensive, and perform insanely well for the price.

The Ka-Bar and Buck 119 Special are both a lot of knife for the money. Big, sharp rugged knives for a bit under 50 bucks.

Just get a Mora of some kind. You will be using it the most of all your knives anyways.

Then, go get a big cool knife like you want. Get a Kabar or something.

Mora.
Mora first. Mora last. Mora always!

Thats what I am probally going to do. Mora, then Kabar as a large knife/chopping machete!

Shoot, skip the Kabar and get a decent machete. Those are always cool. Just get and use that Mora first.

When most people say Ka-Bar, they mean something like this:

It's OK, man. There's a lot of Ka-Bar versions, but it's hard to compete with the original. Here's a thread about its use as a camp knife:

Machete? Tramontia. I'm on a mission to break every machete I can, and three people have told me that tramontia will foil my quest.

I'd stay away from the Kabar ZK weapon things with the flourescent green handles. They've been out for awhile and have not been really tested or reviewed well in that time (not just here but anywhere). Most of the "reviews" I have seen or read were:

Just got it in the mail, it is awesome!!

...or some such like that. For the price point, one can do much better than a Kabar ZK thingy. They do look cool though.

ETA: Yes, Tromantia(sp) machetes are very nice for the money.

I have had a Kabar Khukri for many years and it is a rock solid chopper that holds a fine edge. I would think that the green handled ugly things are from the same factory and the same steel. I don't doubt they are tuff, but they sure are ugly... And if the scabbard is anything like the Khukri's, then the scabbard is utter crap...

Buy yourself a Mora.

I have the ZK WarSword, and a good old fashion ka bar, I would not buy the zk before the original, ever. If you want a chopper but still want to stick to low budget get a machete they are cheap and effective. The tramontia looks like a good one for only 5-10 bucks, the cold steel collection is nice too, just don't get anything to long. I bought the coldsteel kukri machete and loved it, so I bought a 22 inch Latin and its good but flimsy. Stick to 18'' and under. I also own a Ontario kukri knife and it is hardcore. Good size and weight, it also has a hefty spine but I digress.

I bought the ZK because I just liked the way it looked and wanted a fun "anti zombie knife." It is a little short for going against a zombie, but I trust that it will do anything you would expect a good large knife to do. You wont regret buying it and it also comes with black scales incase you don't like the green ones. They also come with a complementary small skeleton knife called the Acheron made of SS.

Good luck with your decision.
