Seems unnecesarily exotic.
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own...

If I wanted to trip a zombie instead of kill it, I'd put a shell of buck in its knee cap.

I'm not so sure they would be so good as a weapon. As a hunting tool, definitely.

This is kind of like the sling(and by sling I mean sling. not wrist rocket). A good field expedient survival tool. The only thing limiting their usage would be the amount of training for them to be effective. I'm thinking a lifetime of practice.

There are easier ways to catch lunch. I mean even if you trained hard and were really good with your bolas and you managed to snag a deer, it's still going to do you some harm when it's thrashing on the ground to get away. It's no good for small game at all. And as a weapon it leaves a lot to be desired. It's a cool looking tool but not worth it's weight in beans in my opinion.

A good use of a bola is as a non-lethal capture weapon. Ex., a captured prisoner is running from you, you need him for information or he's a misguided relative of someone in your group, or whatever. The bola allows you to trip him him long enough to close in and restrain him.

As for catching lunch, there are easier ways, yes. But why limit your options? It's another tool in your arsenal, so why not try it out? They're cheap as all heck to make, and as for weight, the three weights could just be three stones of different weights (that's important), and the bola could have drawstring pouches to hold them. You don't have to carry the stones with you, just find some when you want to use it.

I read that the weights had to be of the same weight

My friends and I used to make bolas and practice with them. We would pick up some oval shaped lead fishing weights and a piece of metal wire. Thread the wire through two fishing weights and tie off the ends. These worked great (in practice). We would use fence post to practice on, and bolas are actually pretty easy to learn how to use. However, we never used it for hunting.

While there are bolo shotgun rounds, lets refrain from discussing them. I've heard such rounds are terrible about sticking in the barrel which in turn, blows said barrel apart around the end of the forearm.

I will have to agree that a bolo is entirely too exotic a weapon to consider using as a weapon/tool of choice. Not only is it too purpose specific in design but its an entirely new skill set to learn. Why do this when there are far easier ways to go about it. I dont know why you would ude it for hunting assuming you had a firearm (I can see some scenarios but they are so unlikey or bizarre as to be discounted), nor do I see why one would use it to capture other humans. If another person is running from you and you need to dipatch them well... there are better ways to do it. If you pointing a firearm at them and shouting "Halt!" in a clear, determined, and authoritive voice doesnt work than well either let them go or hope you can run them down. I also cant really see a purpose for wanting to capture someone who doesnt wish to be in your presence. I suppose there are scenarios where all of the things Ive mentioned can be discounted but the only way I can see them becoming a reality is if one has already messed up badly in their prior decision making process.
