Trench Spike

You know what? I think I could make a mold of that just by looking at it, and I know a friend of mine with steel working tools...

Would anyone be interested in one if I was succesful in my fabrication of a working one?

I'd be sure to test the hell out of it on Coconuts.

Try "Trench knife". You can usually find anything pointy on the knife forums.

In Canada they would probably throw you in Jail for even THINKING of that knife.

Are you kidding? The cops are probably on the way to your house right now just for looking at it! Wait, I'm looking at it too!!!

Doubtful, those are like impossible to send overseas, especially to a locked down police state like Britain.

Really? Wow!

I thought they freaked if you had so much as a bat!

Is it if you only use it as a weapon when they get upset?

The 1918 American model.

I'll get a pair of brass knuckles, and hotglue a good knife to it, them make a mold, and i'll get my metal working buddy to make a cast steel copy of the mold.

I can also shape the entire thing out of clay, then make a mold out of it.

I don't know, but i'll think of some way to make a reliable steel copy of a 1918, we could also try to improve upon the design with some modern ergonomics.

Cast metals don't have the tensile strength of forged ones. It would probably turn out better if you had your friend forge a blade and use the "knuckles" part of the brass knuckles only as a finger guard. I'd still rather have a K-bar or the like for quick dropping and use with gloves or my fuzzy mittens with the ducks on them.

Good point, i'll ask him how long it would take to forge a knife of this.

I am thinking we'll have to use layers of soft and hard steel, to give it a good edge and keep it from shattering.

What is the steel the K-bar uses'?

Depends where you get your knife. Stay away from the 440 stuff. It's crap. A carbon content around 1200 would be good for combat knives, put don't use it for prying stuff open. The more ridged 1200 steel and the like are harder and hold a better edge longer, but it's more brittle. Good for stabbing and cutting, but not as a hammer.

I could just customize the handle of a K-bar, but I would ponder the sturdiness of the bronze knuckles connected to it.

I am thinking that may just be the EASIEST way to go instead of creating a whole new knife.

I could just add a sharp peg on the bottom of the handle, and build the knuckle covers into the handle.

I also came up with a REALLY crazy design that would require quite a lot of engineering ingenuity, but that I think would work pretty well.

I tried to address several problems that people commented on about brass knuckles, or trench spikes in general, how it would be hard to drop them or get out of them if you had to.

I also was thinking about an idea of having a "disengage" bracelet to go with the knife, it would be attached to a pin in the spring locking mechnism that holds the knife up by a peice of elastic twine that if you stab something and let go and pulled away quickly, it would disengage the spring, pulling the knife in and unlocking the knuckles, but then I realized that if you hand was stuck in the brass knuckles you couldn't exactly pull it away to disengage it.

Overall its a pipe-dream and requires a lot more ingenuity than I currently have, but I think its built on sound concepts, and if not tactically sound is at least "cool". (Come on, how could the bastard child of a switchblade and brassknucles NOT be cool? )

When it clamps your fingers onto the knife, cutting off circulation. Or when it extends without you wanting it to, while it's in your pocket, stabbing your personal, vital, area. Or when it breaks due to an overcomplicated system. Or any number of things that could go wrong when any other standard knife would be just as effective.

First, I wasn't going to plan it where it tightened THAT tightly, just tight enough so it doesn't slip off.

As for it popping open in my pocket, the knife mechnism is going to be based around a hardier version of your typical switchblade.

You'r going to have to push in, and slide up, assisting the spring, where is will lock in place until you push it down against and deslide it (the hard part.)

I also didn't want to overcomplicate it, it seems very simply to me.

The knife portion would be based off of a typical switchblade (of which my grandfather has one from when he was a kid that still opens and closes fine.)

The plans for the knuckles section on the other hand are a little more complicated, but I think I could work the kinks out of the idea in time.

I might just have a set knuckle section instead of my adjustable one.

All I know is that it would require testing, as with ANY weapon idea.

And I am sure that a "regular" knife could be just as effective, but I think that this is a unique idea, this is a COMBO weapon that can be used quite differently than a knife and with proper training perhaps BETTER than a knife.

WWI TRENCH KNIFE

Postby LycanthroPirate » Mon Jan 03, 2005 1:20 am

While looking very cool and menacing to a human, what does a zombie care? While it was highly combat effective in WWI, there are indeed impracticalities this weapon presents in hunting the undead. While on the move, the sheer weight of it is cumbersome enough to eliminate any "dual purpose" use as a utility knife. The scabbards for these often hold the knife with sheer friction, as the hilt is too wide to accept most snap-closures. In my personal experience, when I used to carry my trench knife (waaaay back in high school) the weight often caused it to fall out onto the floor and send me scrambling to retrieve it. There is also the chance of injuring fingers, should it become stuck(mentioned earlier in this forum). These days, it's just my letter-opener.
I'd prefer a weapon with better reach, like say a shotgun.

If you really need to get the feel of one to decide for yourself, you can pick up a cheap repro at: http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/eComm ... KU=CO032NS
