My apologies all, especially to this author of this thread... that came off a LOT harsher than it was meant.

As far as me building anything..... I cant build anything more complicated than a mud puddle.

So if this weapon was "built" by the author, and it appears that it was, then you have much more talent than I do... the closest I could come would be to put some nails through the end of a 2x4, and its doubful that I can do that to any level of success.

My apologies once again to the author.

Cold Steel stopped making their Battle Mace (course I bought like six when they were closing out of them at twenty bucks apiece). If I had my druthers such a thing would have a flared or ball pommel to make sure it doesn't slip out of my hands, leather wrap grip, and at least two feet of length. Not that big a fan of spikes for the reasons mentioned earlier. Now if the spikes were flattened out to form screwdriver-like tips and arranged in five or six rows of three, I'd like that. Hickory for the traditionalist in me,but I could go with Rock maple.
My son, you will travel far, but never be alone, for I am with you, my M14 and battle axe comfort you.

I was just wondering but aren't railroad spikes made out of really crap steel? Either way that is a very cool thing you've got there, could we get some more close up photos of it maybe?

Actually, that design should prevet it getting stuck. in anything, unless it bashed clear through a door or something.

I was thinking of making something like this with the flanges made of 1/2" high carbon steel welded to a 1" round bar in the center with a pipe welded to the end of the round to bolt a shaft to.

Yes, the steel is pretty cheap industrial steel, nothing too special about it. Consequently you couldn't hit something with it. In order to hit something, your weapon must be made of a steel with LOTS of letters and numbers in the name.

Seriously, though, other than for looks, I am trying to think of any advantage to having a club made out of fancy-pants steel. I would think the best club material would be cheap stainless, and even then, only for rust (looks) purposes. I would bet my M14 that a rusty, beat up spiky club that has been exposed to road salt for years would crush a skull about as effectively as a brand-new 154CM superattackdeathkillultrasteel57938 spiky club.

An "inch and an eighth" (if memory serves, take your tape measure) pipe cap screws on the end. It's a tight fit, you'll need a pipe wrench or slip-joint pliers to do it up right.

That and six feet of skateboard tape makes the Cold Steel mace feel right handy.

Edit - I also painted the handle and pipe cap black. Makes the whole thing much more stealthy.

Hey! I never got to look at those!

Another option I've seen someone do is to use a gear as the head of a type of flanged mace. It isn't a pointy type morning star, though, so the principle is different.

Regarding the quality of steel, I know railroad spikes are used to make knives (this isn't the first I've heard of that) so I presume they're decent steel, certainly good enough for a morning star. They don't need to "hold an edge" or anything.

Gears are usually made of tough stuff, so the gear flanged mace would have that advantage. Also, usually they've got a hole in the middle already, so all you've got to do is haft it.

if the goal of a zombie-fighting mace is to crush the skull without getting stuck, wouldn't a sphere work better as the blunt end instead of a spike? Weren't the spikes/military picks used more to get through metal helmets, which are generally not an issue in this case?

I'm sure the flanged mace would work nicely too, as long as the penetration points are more obtuse than acute and spiky.
