About 3 weeks ago, I was at home alone hanging out downstairs. I hear 3 footsteps at a running pace upstairs....No pets in the house.

Some days after that, I was walking up the stairs at night with the lights off. Something grabbed my right ankle for a second. There are several openings in the right side of the bottom 1/2 of the stairwell, the handrail is held up by wood posts.

An Eastern Hellbender in the river near my house. Wouldn't have been so bad, but it was in July, and I was thigh-deep in the river fishing, at night. Armed only with a headlamp, my CS Voyager, and a Shakespeare fishing rod. I tried foul hooking it after I realized what it was, but no worky.

Needless to say, it freaked me right the fuck out.
I'm lost and I'm found and I can't touch the ground, I'm plowed into the sound

Middle of the night patrolling through Shazzlefrack, AFG. We were moving tactically with NVDs and IR lights, and I was the second man back because I had the radio and GPS. I start seeing shadows in the moonlight ahead, and hearing screeching and chattering. The burms and walls tossed shadows everywhere, and there wasn't more than maybe 50% illumination to begin with. The pointman screamed and hit the deck faster than he did when taking fire, and if he hadn't hit his white light by accident things might have gone south real fast. His light washed out everybody's NVDs, so we were forced to go overt and light up the area like a christmas tree. The PL and myself saw what the pointman had, at least partially. Something with skinny limbs, a broken chain around its neck, and about as much hair as Gene Simmons mid-KISS. Whatever it was, it bolted around some of the crumbling buildings at the same speed as a dog and then dove into a wadi. We didn't really want to investigate, but did call in an encounter with an "unknown entity moving on all fours at a high rate of speed, semi-human in appearance." We got a solid copy on the transmission, some illum. No idea how high that report made it.

While working security, I saw a guy wearing a blue bikini and waving sparklers run by my post. I called my supervisor and told him what happened, and considered quitting...

Remember the old saying: What has been seen cannot be unseen...
Sam: Hey, Kenneth, why are your eyes bandaged up?
Kenneth: I was trying to look at the sun with NVGs.
Sam: Why?
Kenneth: It seemed like a good idea at the time...plus I was drunk...
Sam: Ah...ok...you're still a dumbass.

About 4 years ago some friends and I were up in michigans upper peninsula deer hunting, our hunting camp is 16 miles down an old logging road and atleast 30 miles to the nearest house, its really remote. On the second day I shot a 4 point and my buddy got a 6 point, our stands were close together. We both field dressed our deer and draged them out of the woods to a open field, about 30 yds from the tree line. We both walked the 1/2mile back to camp to grab the 4wheeler to drag the deer out. We grabed somthing to eat and headed back to grab the deer, we were gone for about 30 mins. We we arrived back to the area we left the deer they were gone, we got on our 2 way radios, thinking some of our other buddies we playn a joke on us . There was a little frost on the grass and you could see where we draged the deer out , but no other tracks. The six of us searched for hours thinking some coyotes draged the deer off, how could somthing drag 2 deer off not leaving any tracks. We never found any tracks or the deer,it was quite strange.

Just a bit off campus I was enjoying some coffee and a Monte cristo #2 and these two guys in suits (probably business students) are practically yelling at each other about politics. Naturally one is a republican and one I'd a democrat and neither side could do anything right or wrong etc. Now it turns to religion and both guys are getting pissed, down the street this guy whom I'm assuming was a Muslim was quitting his job at the chicken place. He's naturally in a chicken costume, he gets a hold of an American flag and lights it on fire. The two guys in suits stop arguing and are yelling obscenities at the guy in a chicken costume who is burning the flag. The two guys in suits start beating the crap out of the chicken suited fella and he's trying to swing this half burnt flag around to defend himself.. Guy dressed like Jesus runs out of a bar and breaks it up by spraying them with a fire extinguisher.

Wtf.. Really wtf

I was at a park once a couple years ago, all night we had been noticing occasional lightning but it was odd because there were no thunderstorms in the forecast. At one point we started to see the flashing concentrated in one area, after about 15 seconds of flashing there was a red flash with what looked like a beam in the middle then it was gone and that was the end of it. I have a video of it on the facebook but im not sure how to post the link here

Just strange in general, but we don't discriminate against the supernatural. ;)

Well then, let's rephrase this: This thread is for strange things you've experienced in general. This includes the supernatural; but be aware that a lot of people are rather sceptical about that and even though they know it's not really a nice thing to do, they will sometimes point and laugh at stories told in here.

I've had several inquiries about that she-thing we saw in Afghanistan. I had a few beers this weekend with my pointman, and in the end the best explanation we could come up with a Djinn of some kind. I also emailed my old interpreter, and he believes it to be a local demon-spirit. He says the elders in the area claim that there are many demons in the area, and have been since the Soviets came.

Re: strangest thing you have ever seen

Postby fourway » Wed Nov 09, 2011 4:32 am

When I was about 14 I got asked to come along to get the body of a an old recluse lady who had lived in a small shack partway up the mountain for as long as anyone could remember. She normally holed up all winter and came down to the store/post office in the spring for tobacco and other supplies, but when nobody had seen her by June someone hiked up to check on her and found her dead.
She was a fairly large person and it was a rough path up so he'd come down and stopped at our place and went to round up another four or five people to help get her down.
Nobody had ever been inside her place, you saw it from a distance but she had a reputation for shooting at anyone who came close so you always tried to give the shack a wide berth.
It was a hovel, it was maybe 10' by 10' small wood stove, made of mill ends and sheet metal, every inch of floor right up to way too close to the stove was stacked 5 feet deep with garbage, vodka bottle, tobacco cans and empty tins, animal bones, bits of unidentifiable matter and sodden wads of paper and loam.
In the single clear spot on the floor the body was laying naked, clearly decomposed, both legs completely covered with maggots to the knees and one hand also writhing with maggots... the smell was so bad that the guy who first opened the door hurled instantly and as the smell rolled out the door a couple other people started retching.
There was only enough room inside for two people to get in to drag her outside and it was going to require being very close to the body. A long discussion ensued. Everyone was sort of milling around and hemming and hawing hoping someone else would volunteer to be the one to go inside.
A few days before I had just finished doing my first brain tanned hide, and I'd messed up and allowed my brains to go pretty badly off while I was slaking the hair off, and had ended up working the hide with very ripe brains... so I had a bit of nose death remaining and while the smell in the shack was horrible it wasn't making me woozy and finally I got bored of standing around and offered to go in.
After another minute or two one of our neighbors agreed to go in with me and we wedged ourselves into the doorway and stood at the head of the bloated discolored 300lb corpse trying to decide which one of us was going to grab it by the maggot covered legs.
He finally decides he'll go (he had gloves) and tries to get to her feet without stepping on her and winds up causing an avalanche of debris that coveres the lower half of the body.
We quickly agree to try to drag her out by her arms.
The body is on its side so he gets hold of the lower arm (the maggoty one) up by the elbow and I grab the cold dead top arm and pull to try to roll her a bit more onto her back for the drag out the door.
as she rolls onto her back her eyes pop open and she starts croaking at us in russian.
Not dead.
We both bolt screaming bloody murder and have a classic laurel & hardy moment trying to get out the narrow door at the same time and come tumbling out into the folks crowded by the door (as close as their noses would allow) and they all start screaming too.
Someone runs down to the nearest phone (another 4 miles past our place and calls rescue who land a chopper in our yard and hump up the mountain to get her themselves (to everyone's great relief).
She died at hospital about a week later.

I've seen uglier dead people, and I've seen more messed up live people, I've seen nastier living spaces... but I've never had a corpse start yelling at me (when I was inches from its face no less) but the once... and that is easily one time too many.

Not two years ago, I was rolling down state street with my lady friend when this hopped up hippy dreadlocked moron started railing at me - "Use Hydrogen!" -

Yeah - did he not notice that I was using muscle power to locomote my crippled ass down the street, which is a lot more efficient on all scores than hydrogen power?

Seems lately in Madison there are a lot more people who are completely incapable of being out in public without causing everyone else to want them locked up for the night. After that episode, Ive noticed things like that a lot more. I pretty much always attribute that kind of shit to drug abuse. Jaded? Probably. Incorrect? I doubt it.

I used to be a low level flunky in an emergency room, I saw a few gnarly cases come in that made other people blanch and get pale, but it never happened to me. There was the disabled homeless woman who'd been squatting in a condemned house who hadn't noticed the rats gnawing on her legs for days and days. There was the bicyclist who ran into some other vehicle and had his scrotum sliced open by a piece of ripped up bicycle frame as he flew over the handle bars. Both testicles were intact, just laying outside the scrotum against his raggedly spandexed inner thigh. Dr. L. examined them by taking each one in turn between gloved thumb and index finger and gently rotating the testicle one way, then another - I guess to see if any connections were severed or kinked, IDK. It had an almost comical effect on the male nurse and nurse tech in the room, who got pale and clammy just watching. I had a pretty strong stomach, and never got that reaction.

The only time I ever got that "ick" feeling was when a nurse asked me to go into a room to draw blood from a four year old. No big deal, I took a co-worker with me to help hold him, but I was pretty good at getting samples from kids.

He was sitting up on the stretcher with his back to the door, and I could see the multiple iron marks on his back. Someone had repeatedly, on more than one occasion - some were fresh, some were healed scars, some were in between - pressed a hot steam iron into the little boys back. You could clearly make out the point of the iron, and the edges curving down from it, and see the distinct marks of the steam holes. You could sort of make out the "GE" logo on some of them.

And I got that sick feeling - felt nauseated, hot and sweaty, got momentary tunnel vision and felt a brief loss of balance and a floating or "outside myself" feeling.

The boy's father was sitting on a stool in the far corner of the room, with his legs drawn up and one hand in his mouth, sort of biting down on his knuckles. The temptation to say or do something unprofessional was strong at that point, but I kept my cool.

Found out later that the dad had just regained custody of the boy that day. His son had been living with his mother and her boyfriend. Not sure if the dad had brought the boy in or if he'd been contacted by the hospital, the mother and boyfriend weren't around when I saw the boy.

Sometime after I got the sample the hospital called the mother and told her she needed to come in, that there was something wrong with her son. She showed up and was arrested as soon as she walked in. By way of protest she said "I wouldn't abuse that child! If I wasn't gonna take care of it I'd have aborted it!"
(No politics. I'm in favor of a woman's right to choose but that's still a weird and shitty thing to say IMO.)

I don't know if that counts as strange, 'cause child abuse happens all the time but I hadn't seen it before and was sort of blown away by the cruelty of it, and the fact that someone could think it was appropriate to do something like that.

Another favorite was when I got handed a maggot from a patient's wound - a nice fat happy maggot - in a plastic specimen cup and was asked to take it to the lab so they could culture it. I dutifully walked down to the lab and handed the cup to a med tech. who informed me that she was not an entomologist.
