I never get any responses at school..even though my knife is highly visible ( a black para 2 and I usually wear light colored jeans) even the teachers, and security have seen it.

However...I was at work a few days ago (where a knife is pretty much mandatory) and I needed to cut something. I opened it with two hands, to avoid problems, and I saw a female co worker flinch and it looked as she was going to faint

As Tactical Badger mentioned already, the Böker+ RBB gets dirty looks wherever it travels (the little auto one not so much).

Years ago we were at a birthday party and my brother asked me for a knife because he was having trouble unwrapping one of the gifts. The look on his face as I handed him my M16-14SF was priceless, so full of accusation.

He later received one for his birthday, but still refuses to carry it.

Just today:

Supply room employee has trouble opening a box, sealed with tape.

I say "Would you like a hand opening that?"

"Sure."

*leatherman comes out from it's little holster, blade flicks out, everything is cut in a safe and efficient manner, and it goes back away, waiting for another chance to be awesome.*

Her: "You do know that's considered a concealed weapon, right?"

Me: "You do know it's not?"

I then rattle off Oregon's concealed weapons law, knife related, right down to where and how long and opening method. (Automatic, over 6 inch, and anywhere but on the belt is reg'd in OR.)

She just looks at me.

the most common comment would be
why do you carry a knife ?
as i respond
why don't you ?

people automatically think that we carry knife to threat people with it. or think that it is dangerous. or don't know what is the carrying law about knifes.
people forgot that not so long time ago, EVERYONE was carrying a knife. any gentleman was carrying a pocket knife,or a smoking pipe knife. people also had knife for cutting their lunch.

I have crossed the border into the united states many many times with a knife. Every time i've been searched (which is probably half a dozen) they have had me turn out my pockets and seen my pocket knife, and they have searched my car. I have a folder in the glove compartment, a folder in the centre console, an 8" fixed blade and a multitool in my edc, and a multitool and miniature keychain sized folder in my first aid kit. That's 7 knives, and no one has ever said a word to me about it. (except me being asked about why I need so much gear for a 2 hour shopping trip)

I think you may just be quoting conjecture and rumour. Either that or that particular customs official/your friend had an attitude problem.

Just last night at a steak house eating at the bar with a friend. I pull out my CRKT M 16 to cut my steak (house knives sucked donkey balls), lady leans over her friend to get close enough to say "is that necessary" . Me "nope sorry" put down knife, pick up steak whole and take a bite. :) She left me alone after

There has been a lot of discussion on ZS recently regarding the importance of being a "Grey Man".

It goes to show that many of us, myself included have got a lot to learn. If people openly refer to us as "preppers" or "survivalists" and know we carry first aid kits, temporary shelters, lights, knives, paracord etc then we certainly are not capable of calling ourselves "grey men".

I will not stop being prepared, however since people are clearly becoming more sensitive, scared and intimidated by the site of EDC items like multi-tools, flash lights and first aid kits then I will simply exercise more caution in using the tools at my disposal.

I've ended up switching from my spyderco endura to a kershaw skyline. Less conspicuous and less "aggressive" when it comes out to open a box or something.

It's weird... i don't really remember ever having people look at me weird about my pocket knifes or knifes in general until yesterday WHILE i was reading this thread 1 of the guys from another store on my strip mall came in to get food. Pretty familiar with the dude, we shoot the shit here and there.. he asked

Him: what u get for Christmas?
Me: (pull out the RAT-3 that just came in)
Him: you got a knife?!?! who u gonna kill with that?
Me: :Shrugg:

Where i grew up, a lot of people had a pocket knife on them at all times and this was the Republic of Commifornia!!! My first full-time job was at a sporting good store, and everyone had a knife on them. Up until my favorite Gerber pocket knife lost its clip i always had in my back left pocket. I also used to EDC my work knifes since i worked at a couple of sushi joints at the time, so i would have a 10" a 12", and a 6" chef knife in my bag (never got to bust those out outside of work tho...)

Weird thing that did happen when i first moved to KC tho was that people thought i was weird for wearing a wallet chain... So when asked about it, my answer is "cause i worry about losing my wallet and keys" . But i thought to myself... THATS WHAT WALLET CHAINS ARE FOR U NUMB NUTS!! Well i don't usually mention the other reason as that its a great improvised weapon in a pinch..

what killing me is when i hear:

those who carry knife are probably waiting to kill someone

why would you carry a knife.......it's useless

only criminal need a blade

that illegal to have that
(while talking a 3 inch folder who was in plain view, and my multitools which was in is pouch on my belt and was at work, where there will be the greatest chance for me to need them)
who do you think you are ? Rambo ?

(all those quote were said to me at least once)

when i hear that i feel like sh*** . i can't believe that people could think like that. if we look just a couple years back at the time of their father and grand father, EVERY gentleman was carrying a knife, mostly grand-daddy folder but still.

The only time i get a look is when a person ask to borrow my knife and i hand them my pos knife(and that is the reason I carry 2)No worry about returning or broken blade.

I carry a POS multi tool, and flashlight in a pouch on my belt for work.

Last night I stopped in a truck pull-off because my trailer lights were 'flickering'. It is a common problem with "Railroad" chassis, the pins on the electrical plugs get 'smashed' together. As I jumped out of the truck and I didn't see the "Highway" pull up behind me because he turned off his headlights when he left the interstate, I grabbed my flashlight and opened my knife up and proceeded to 'spread' the pins out. And right behind me I hear a voice say, "do you always carry a knife that you could pull out that fast?"
I didn’t know I could climb a "rail" container that fast. :gonk:
After I calmed down, and he stopped laughing, He told me that, "he was about to pull me over for my tail light flicker". After a little chat, he let me go.

Today in geology were on a field trip...and were taking samples of clay to anaylze the grain size...so i flip out my cheapo pocket knife non-chalantly and scrap a flat spot to get a better angle on the grains...and one of the guys in my group starts acting like an ass hat and tries to humilate me.

Him: Why do you have knife? what are you a serial killer or somthing, i dont trust you with a knife...

Then of course a two hot girls in class look at me like a freak and mutter "thats scary" as they back away...

I just look at them and roll my eyes as i close the blade and slip it in my pocket again.

Me: well havent you ever had to open somthing where you wish you had somthign sharp?

Him: no...i just use my hands like everyone else.

God why are people stupid.

Oh..and later on in the field trip on our way back, a guy behind me asks if anyone has any sissors so i pull out my SOG powerlock EOD and hand him my sharpened pliers.

Guy: Whoa...thats intense...thanks

I then notice that hes having trouble so i pull out my SAK on my keys and open the sissors on them to trade him tools for the moment...of course the cute girl next to him looks at me like a freak as well...

Many years ago I was wearing a photographer vest (it was "popular" with the CCW folks at that time) and someone came up to me and asked me in a loud voice if I was carrying a concealed firearm. Of course it had to happen in the mall, and the guy (with his significant other in tow) would not take no for an answer.

His response was I have a vest just like that and I use it to hide my pistol when I carry. Everyone uses those vest to conceal their pistols, what kind of pistol do you carry?

Me: Listen, I'd be the first one to know if I had a CCW or a weapon on me and I'm telling you that I don't have one. In fact I don't even own a firearm, I was fishing and this is what I use to carry all my stuff.

Fishing? Where do you fish at? What type of fish were you after? Man this is South Dakota and you should have a gun, its easy to get a CCW here.

People were listening and watching us both.

My wife tried to save me, by calling me over and telling me it was time to leave. It did not work, they followed me over to my wife.

His response was to introduce himself, the female he was with and wait for me to introduce myself and my wife. My wife introduced herself and then me and said it was nice meeting you, but we really have to go. We left, went straight to the car and then home.

In fact I did have my EDC pistol on me as did my wife, the vest has been in the closet for years now.
