SHTF On Your Way To A Sporting Event

Postby DyslexicDancer » Wed Aug 29, 2012 3:40 pm

Scenario came from a dream I had.

It's early September and you are on your way to an NFL Football game in a major city that is 350 miles away from your home. You are planning to meet up with two friends from the Military. The Three of you served together during your last Tour and had made plans to catch the game together and catch up on old times.

You are a few miles away from the stadium and make a stop at a Wal-Mart Supercenter to pick up a few things for a Tailgate party where you were planning on meeting up with your friends from the Military a few hours before that game was to begin.

Before you can check-out there is a large explosion outside and all power goes out. You run outside to see what happened.

When you get outside you see that a large group of vehicles in the parking lot are on fire from a gas tanker that exploded, your vehicle is one of the vehicles on fire.

You attempt to use your Cell phone to call the police and report the Explosion/Fire, but your cell phone is not working, you look at your digital watch and see that it also is not working.

You feel a blast of air pressure and look up to see a large Mushroom cloud rising up in the distance (20+ miles away in the direction of your home).

Very high up in the sky you see the afterglow of what you assume to have been a High Altitude Nuclear Explosion, which would have caused an EMP explaining all the electronic devices not working.

People have begun to panic and you see a few people running out of the Supercenter with carts of merchandise.

You have $100 in cash and no supplies other then your EDC items, Any items you would normally keep in your vehicle have been destroyed by the fire in the parking lot and you have almost 350 mile to get to your home, and there is a large Mushroom cloud in your way.

With the above situation, What would you do?

Die, because I'm close enough to a nuke to fry EVERYTHING, therefore I'm going to be dead from radiation burns and acute poisoning before I can make the walk home. Perhaps I'll write a poem...

Find a box of twinkies, sit down and eat them while enjoying the last few minutes of my life

What's with all these WWYDs where the only plausible outcome is to die horribly? Do you guys really enjoy thinking about your impending demise that much?

It was a dream I had, and got me thinking.

Besides 20+ miles away from a smaller yield nuclear explosion is very survivable.

It comes from people not reading the "How to use this forum section" of the WWYD section. The parts where it says "Specific Scenario You want To Know How to Handle" and "Not A Sandbox" are supposed to be clues that this is not a sandbox to make up implausible scenarios and see how people respond.

[CITATION REQUIRED] on the 20 miles killed every piece of electronics, and the surviving a nuclear blast that is big enough to fry ALL the electronics when all of my gear is gone. That's a death sentence, unless you're trying to get someone to say "Well, in complete disregard for the forum rules, I'd go loot XYZ" because that's not gonna happen. If all of the above happened, then I'm taking that as a sign that I am needed in Asgard.

So this site has scenarios where people ask WWYD if a Zombie Apocalypse happened, or WWYD if your best friend was bitten by a Zombie, and somehow me asking about a situation, as improbable as it may be, could actually happen. And it is dismissed as you "didn't read the rules" your not suppose to post implausible scenarios.

Is this a specific scenario you want to know how to prepare for? How would you prepare for all your shit going up in smoke and a nuke going off in the air 20 miles away? What would you suggest?

SHTF On Your Way To A Sporting Event

Walmart sells assorted whiskey. I'd be trying to set the last world record for drinking, more than likely.

If the EMP is powerful enough to fry everything then the radiation will get me.

Since my hometown is under 30k for population and there's no viable nuclear target there, spend the remaining moments of my life puzzling out who has that many nukes that they can spare enough to eliminate any town larger than 20k people.

Fast forward 5 years, same scenario: wonder who has so many nukes they they decided any town with a population over 8k is a viable target as I die.

I can say with certainty that this would be one of the few times that "I'm bugging out to WalMart!" would be a viable choice. I have cash, time to hit the sporting goods section. Sleeping bag, water purification and a stainless bottle or two, clif bars and MH, one or two awesome blue tarps... I know the computer controlled checkout would be down, but I would probably just hand whatever cash I had to the hapless cashier and haul on out of there.

...come to think of it, I would probably look into the options of bugging in, IN the walmart. Food, water, scrapbooking supplies, all in one place! At some point the huddled masses would get the same idea I know, but for a while it would be better to stay indoors. Maybe I'll hang out in the Automotive department. Nobody is ever there.

At some point I would have to start trying to make my way home. Thats when the fun begins.

EDIT TO ADD: dust masks and/or repirators, raingear, nitrile and work gloves would probably not be bad things to throw in the shopping cart.

Being that close to a nuclear blast I would head to the pharmacy and get some 10,000 SPF suncreen and grab a set of Blue Blockers to cover my eyes.

Only two? I bought five boxes last week. Do they treat rifle ammo differently, or is it an area thing?

They usually have a pretty low stock in my area.

The emp wouldn't hurt you. Nobody died in the one that hit hawaii. And if I remember right a girl in japan lived to her 80's and she was 1000 meters from the hypocenter, shielded by a bank vault if I remember right. It is way more survivable than you all are making it. I'd get some food water and a pack and start walking .

Are you talking about Starfish Prime? Because that detonation was 1,445km away from Hawaii and IN SPACE!!!! I'm still trying to figure out how that tanker caught fire and exploded as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the blast/emp.

Yes and all emp blasts are in space. Maybe he crashed when he saw the flash. The emp is caused when the energy released from the nuke reacts with the ionosphere. If it is not in space/upper atmosphere then no emp.

Well forget buying anything in Walmart if the power goes out. Once the power is out every employee stops what they are doing and herds everyone towards the registers while the emergency power is still running them. Once the emergency power is out then everyone is herded outside and not let back in. If you are outside they won't let you in.

So, emp in this scenario would require breaking the law if you want to get anything in Walmart.

I would go to my vehicle and see if there is anything at all to save. With a nuke going off 20 miles away it can't hurt to check out what is now a blasted shell of my vehicle. Maybe some kind soul will have mercy on me and help me out.

OP said the nuke was 20 miles away, and that all the electric things died. I'm assuming there's something going on here other than an EMP.

Also: read more about EMP. They can happen in the atmosphere. There a few threads here about that.
