Morning news said there were 58 arrests and 4 police injured in Chicago, one stabbed in the leg. But it was mainly "peaceful." Call me a naysayer but how can anything be peaceful if a cop gets stabbed?

I assume the news said this information all in relation to NATO meetings?
As I understand, Chicago is one of the most violent cities in America (Though a quick Google search says it didn't make the top 25 last year).
Or maybe they were comparing it directly to similar meetings such as the Toronto G20 meetings or the G8 in Germany (noted above).

I think comparing one incident to another will leads to false claims. It's like saying there were a bunch of rapes and murders at one event but this one only had one so it's peaceful.

NATO events still rather tame as of Monday morning.

Yup. Lots of of demonstrators downtown, some on hand for legitimate rallies, others for pure mayhem.

The scuffles and arrests, thus far, are a yawn, even those of the alleged fire bombers a few days ago.

Heck, on a given Friday or Saturday night there's at least five to seven gang or drug-related slayings in the windy city.

I'd be more willing to hang out in the Loop right now than on the corner of 52nd and Cottage Grove.

Those of use in the area should be able to keep ZS posted on further developments.

I wish they'd define "flu like.". The official fever/respiratory illness, or the more common GI illness? I've been at a convention with norovirus (GI illness) outbreak - it's not pretty but not fatal...

Could be an HIV outbreak. That can present early with flu like symptoms.

I worked extensively through the whole process of the September 2009 Pittsburgh G20 Summit. Due to ongoing legal issues, I am not at liberty to discuss some of what went on.

Having major heads of state at one venue allows for numerous sidebar meetings and get-togethers that just wouldn't happen over a video conference or individual summits. Most of the protest groups are peaceful and have a purpose for being there. It's the other 10% or so that seek to cause disruption, do damage, and gain notoriety. Some are there just to get arrested in front of the cameras.

There has been a move to hold major international summits at more "cloistered" locations. The G8 was held in Camp David and the previous Canadian G8 was held in a resort up in Ontario. One issue that may arise here is access for those seeking to exercise their First Amendment rights, which means they must be able to access a location within sight and hearing of the main venue. (I don't make the rules, the lawyers do).
