Especially when you insinuations are one sided against the current administration.

Don't forget that Clinton, Bush Sr, Reagan and Carter's adminstrations all chose to ignore the problem (if there really is one to ignore).

Also, my inference is in regards to federal aid and funding - something every university uses and every grad student or college scientist (such as my stepfather at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory with the University of Columbia) strives to attain.

It doesn't matter what administration is in power. While the President may propose a budget for spending it is Congress that actually poneys up the money and is constantly creating new programs and funds. And with Congress pretty much 50/50 (with variations one way or another here and there) for the last half a generation I think its fair to say that nearly all of those programs have one bent to it for one "side" or another.

My statements was a complaint that scientists who feel that their only viable source of income is from those seeking to perpetuate their paradigm.

I was attacking a process and its affects on science and the credability of reliable information. Your attack was specifically political against a specific political entity. And going down that path is the only thing that will burn this discussion down in flames.

That discussion has, admitedly, been derailed from a discussion on global cooling vs. global warming to one of honest debate about the credibility of sources...not a political diatribe about president bush's current administration. Please, keep it there.

That's weird that you're talking about insinuations when you're insinuating that I mean "current administration" and "Bush", when I didn't say either in my post...

Please relax. I DIDN'T mean Bush. About the word "nucular"? Sure. But everything else? I meant government.

Besides, if I'd meant Bush instead of "government" in regards to the global warming/cooling/whatever, I would have said "the retarded chimp in the oval orifice" so there'd be no doubt. /sarcasm

The Ice age went away and the glaciers retreated because cave men had automobiles! Don't you guys know anything!?!?

FWIW, higher CO2 levels follow global warming--not cause them. Cold water contains more gas than warm water (this is why you burp after you drink beer). As the water warms, it releases more gases--more CO2.

While we're on the subject, CO2 is not a pollutant, regardless of what the Supreme court says. It is the second-most important compound in the atmosphere after oxygen. 90% (some say 95%) of the "greenhouse gas" is [drum roll] Water Vapor! Let's get rid of all the water!!!

FWIW, if it weren't for the so-called "Green house effect" (even though the Earth does not exactly run like a green house, but whatever) the ambient temperature of the Earth would be -18 C.

Ok, let's try to get BACK ON TRACK please.

Sometime in the last millineum, around 1200 or so, the world entered into a little ice age. It stayed that way until sometime around 1800. Then it started to warm back up. If it's cold for 600 years doesn't it make sense that if it goes down, then it's natural for it to come back up?

After witnessing the fate of Ellie's forays into humor on this thread, I'm just glad I backed out before posting on most of my attempts. My jokes were even less adroit than hers, and thus even more likely to generate responses treating them as some sort of serious political position statements.

I suppose if I want a discussion on this topic that might have a chance to really focus on the preparation aspects of the issue, at this point the best thing to do would be to start a new thread altogether. Someday.

With friendship toward all and malice toward none, I bid this thread good night and good luck.

I would like to make a point about Carbon Credits. Let's not be political, but I am picking on someone whose name starts with Al and ends with Gore.

First, what is a carbon credit? Say you have an industrial business, a factory that uses energy (say by burning coal) or produces CO2. So you buy carbon credits for someone to plant trees. Al Gore is a carbon credit broker. He buys and sells carbon credits all day long (his company does, rather). Each time a credit is bought or sold, he gets a piece of the action. So he stands to make billions of dollars in the Carbon Economy. Follow the money.

Now imagine that Al Gore was, instead, a used car salesman. He buys and sells used cars, and each time there is a transaction, he makes a profit. Now imagine that he is in a position to affect laws. He can lean on politicians to make laws to REQUIRE that every company has to buy a used car. Since he is one of only a small handfull of used car dealers, he will make Billions. With a capital B.

I call BS. I also call Conflict of Interest.

Now in the hypocrisy bandwagon, Al Gore happens to have a house that is 10x the national average size, uses whopping amounts of electricity, has an indoor pool that is heated (I forgot the stat but it was staggering, THOUSANDS of dollars a month just to heat the pool), and he jetsets around the world in a private jet that puts out more emissions in a day than I use in a year. Oh that's right, he's IMPORTANT. All those rules and regs are just for the little people - he's one of the Elite. Hypocrisy is painful, isn't it?

Now, I am not being political - I hate some Republicans just as much as I hate Dems. I just want them all to go away and leave us alone. Stop telling us what to do... stop taking away our money and wasting it on frivolous shiny things... stop spending our grandchildren into the poor house... stop the Ponzi schemes with accounting... stop giving up our superpower status for their own greed... stop wholesale infringement upon our freedoms. Once we get there, we can quibble over the (D) or (R) behind someone's name. (Hint: there isn't much difference by now.)

They want us to be polarized and pay attention to the 'us' vs. 'them' and don't pay attention to the nonsense that they get away with daily. We would be arrested for said nonsense. We would be fired from our jobs for mismanaging and wasting money and time the way that they do.

(Deep breath.) There, I feel much better now. Now, if only we could have any kind of chance of making a difference.

Hypocrisy sucks. I hate all political parties. I really hate that bug-eyed Bono guy. Even here at my local university, they've just finished a $1 billion fundraising campaign whilst simultaneously shutting down the only museum for "lack of funds", and slashing department budgets campus-wide for "lack of funds"; meanwhile, the sports department gets enormous boosts, land is being slashed left and right for mammoth parking garages, and suddenly the chancellor is getting a juicy piece of land on top of a hill overlooking the campus cleared, and a mansion put on it. A publicly-funded state university, where now most public kids can't even afford to get in to. Even all of that has to do with politics and power (after living 90% of my life in this state, and 20 years of that around this university, some of the bedding that goes on boggles my mind), and I see it as incredibly destructive to the economy just here locally, as well as the local environment, and it's a dark spot on a lot of people's consciousness here in town. But what the heck can you do about it?

The carbon credits thing... meh. Are many people so disconnected with their own environment that they forget they can just go buy a tree from Home Depot and plant it? Funnelling money through third-party systems for "causes", when not absolutely necessary, leaves me cold. I prefer the direct approach, if it's possible.

I would love to be able to run my car on french fry oil, too.

There are some interesting links regarding the environment here.

This one in particular discusses two factors that may be influencing climate change: Global warming and global dimming.

This is a pretty controversial website, not for children or the easily persuaded. So if you are going to flame me just surf on. You should all know that a lot of the vids linked here are not my opinion, nor do I think are they the opinion of the webmaster that runs this site. My feeling is that he just believes in "True" freespeech and allows all views and propaganda.

Whatever you think of these or the other vids on the site. I guarantee that you will heat up your noodle thinking about it...and you will get mad about something.
