(Maine) State agencies train for the zombie apocalypse

"While the CDC keeps nervously assuring the country zombies don't exist, the emergency agencies of Bangor, Maine, are officially training for a zombie apocalypse. Bangor, which coincidentally is home to Stephen King, could possibly be letting its morbid imagination run wild. Or maybe this is just a fun simulation that allows first responders to brush up on their basics in dealing with potentially pandemic outbreaks (such as SARS or H1N1) while mingling with role-playing actors gussied up in fake blood. Or, you know, maybe it's time we all took a hint from the headlines and started putting together our zombie-proof snow-plow-cum-school-bus rigs and practicing our head shots. Better safe than sorry."

During PAW you will be free to locate and ask the last guy running your local bio lab, "zombie, is it in you?" à la
Walking Dead. :oh:

What can we say? Mainers take the inevitable zombie apocalypse VERY seriously. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to finish boarding up my windows.

If you can survive that winter, you can survive the zombies. Heck they would freeze to death before scratching at the door. Just make sure you can jump out the back window onto the roof of your bug out school bus. Or something. :awesome:

Having been to Cadillac mountain as a kid, I totally agree. I think we picked wild blueberries on the side of the mountain for pancakes. One of my best memories.

Maybe this is what the DHS bought 1.4 Billion Hollow Point bullets for.

1. Get your facts straight.
2. Don't derail a decent thread.

OT: I'm surprised Stephen King wasn't more visibly involved in this.

Um, how did I derail a thread. Is DHS not a state/government agency?

2; could they not be using the bullets in training?

Weather or not they are literally training for zombies, as the title of the thread suggests, I do not know but my post was on topic AFAIK. They said the bullets were for training.

Citation

I had to root that out of about a dozen 'conspiracy theory tinfoil hat' sites, one of which had a featured article called 'Why the States Must Secede to Save America'. Every google-found site saying '1.2 billion DHS' was one of those tinfoil hat sites. EVERY one.

That being said, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that those rounds are in fact going toward training, because some of the calibers listed (.38 Special, .357 SIG, .30-06) aren't generally used. Around 3100 thousand .357 SIG were ordered, implying that this is a bulk order for other agencies like Secret Service, Air Marshals, or other state/local level agencies.

OT, maybe this Maine town will be like the one from the cinematic ending of I Am Legend.

Don't sweat it. Maybe you meant it in jest. Maybe you didn't. Just understand that the DHS ammo buy has become sort of an internet meme for every crackpot, tinfoil conspiracy survivalist theory out there. It doesn't get much traction here at ZS where people think critically, evaluate their news sources, and are mindful of the legitimate resource needs of government agencies.

And as a resident of Maine, I can assure you that while the "Zombie infection" theme was quite useful in orchestrating the multidisciplinary involvement of LEO, first responder, health management and county emergency agencies, the exercise was done with tongues firmly in cheek.
