Got my tax stamp in the mail today for my LMT SBR! I hadn't called the ATF, so I had no idea when it would be arriving, or if I was even approved. Quite happy to open it up and see that stamp staring back at me on the Form 1. Now to actually SBR the LMT. I'll post pics when I get the 10.5" bbl in it.

Oh, and the stats;
Signed & mailed: 11 JUL 2009
Check cashed: 07 AUG 2009
Approved: 28 OCT 2009 (Ted C)
Received: 31 OCT 2009 (happy Halloween!)

So, I took it out to my indoor range the other day just to get a few rounds down range and make sure it wasn't going to blow up in my hands. Put 100 rounds through it without a single hiccup, wetted up at the get-go with Slip2000. Not enough to really put it through any paces, but I just wanted to get a feel for it. I plan on doing a proper 50/200 yard zero in the next week or two when I can find the time to make it to the outdoor range. Did a quick and dirty 25 yard zero with and every round was going exactly where I wanted it to in nice, tight groups, both with irons only and the Aimpoint. Not worth posting a real range AAR because it wasn't. Just a short, fun trip to put some lead through it. I'll get a proper one up when I get to the outdoor range and really test it.

It ran very smooth and very LOUD :D :D
I think the combination of the ACE stock and Spike's heavy buffer greatly contributed to it's smoothness. It actually rattled my Troy BUIS loose a few times, but that wasn't translated into any felt additional recoil. The loose BUIS surprised me. I got that fucker screwed down tight and I'm hesitant to locktite it. I will if I have to though.

My "meh" for the magpul front sight was confirmed. Just too bulky. Troy front sight on the way.

Scared the hell out of a women in the lane next to me with that first shot

No complaints so far. It's pure joy to shoot!

Very nice. 8)

I've put thousands of rounds through my 10.5" LMT (also w/ KX3) but never indoors. I can't imagine how loud that would be! :)

I too was less than impressed with the MBUS front sight. Sold mine very quickly. I like the MBUS rear (currently on my SBR, seeing if I prefer a folding BUIS to the fixed I've been running for years) but the MBUS front sight is one of the few - perhaps only the second - Magpul product that I genuinely disliked.

Once again, congrats.

I am officially jelous!!!!

why did you decide to go with an SBR as opposed to a 14.5 or 16" barrel? is it just for looks? just cause you wanted one? SHTF preparations? Line of work?

how much did you invest on everything including the stamp for it?

I specifically wanted to SBR the LMT MRP system, which is set up for (appox) 5 min barrel swaps. With the 10.5" option, I can switch between 10.5, 14.5" or 16". Next year I'd like to get the 14.5" bbl and suppress it, to complete the versatility of the rifle. I have a feeling that once I get the 14.5" bbl, that will probably be the one run the most. I also liked the 10.5" because of my environment. I live in a very dense urban area, where 200+ yard shots wouldn't be an immediate concern in a SHTF situation. Of course, if I needed to bug out of the city, I'd have the ability to increase the bbl length if needed.

That, and the 10.5" bbl is pretty f'in cool. :D

Costs;
MRP upper w/ 16" bbl; $1080
10.5" bbl; $320
Lower; $300
ACE stock; $200
KX3; $125
Troy front and BUIS; $210
MIAD set; $45
_____
$2280 + shipping costs

That's not including the Aimpoint and LaRue mount, LaRue vert grip, rail covers, sling, TRL light, and eventually the aimpoint x3 magnifier in LaRue quick flip mount.

Dave-- I think prices have been going down a lot lately. That one can now get quality for $999 (ie, the Daniel defense sale last month) is a good thing.

Oh, I did forget the DD BCG, $135, and PRI gasbuster charging handle, $89.

The sling is coyote brown. It's just the lighting.

Ok. So the grip and all of that isn't tan/orange/desert-ish? Because I'd have to wonder where in Philadelphia your desert gear would come in handy. :P

I don't know... coloring guns just doesn't do it for me. Sure airsoft or paintball... it might be fun for the additional camouflage. Maybe even if you were deployed. But as an average person... if you needed your guns to blend into your environment that bad, you have a lot more to worry about.

In the end, I'm not going to knock someone else's gun or gear... because hey, whatever floats your boat. I'm just saying it doesn't make much sense to me. It's like fishing with a "water camo" boat.

Yup, the grip and accessories are FDE/desert colored. I understand your point, camo'ing the AR as a civvie is uneeded. But those colors do appear outside of the desert environment and like most folks here, I think about and prepare for SHTF situations. Surprisingly, the overwhelming color patterns in Philly are shades of brown/tan and green. FDE matches the city sidewalks almost exactly in many places, so does foliage. Is it unlikely that I'll ever need to worry about this? Absolutely. But, just in case...

Mostly though, I just like breaking up the all-black with different pattern. I like the way it looks on this particular rifle. The next build I'm planning will be all black, with no color breakups. It's all mostly aesthetic choices, with a little bit of "what if..." thrown in.

Depends on the environment and the intended use. As M4 Guru Pat Rodgers sez, "black is whack" (BIW).

That said, you can also over do it.

Guys take their ARs and play around with what's currently available in rail panels as well as paint - OD green, foliage green, coyote brown, so-called desert tan, black, gray, and I've even seen a set of XTM panels that got hit with crimson red KG Gunkote.

Plus, there's a lot of possible combinations of any of the foregoing colors that might yield a quasi-camo-digital effect. Some are understated and some are, ... well, a bit out there ...

Not mine ...
Image

Also not mine ...
Image

MRP SBR: mine in old style BIW mode ...
Image

More recently, ... playing around with Magpuls XTM panels.
Image

Black & foliage green "digital effect" on a Noveske Recon ...
Image

Here, somebody went nutz with the paint: a coyote blaster "digitizied" in black & FDE (coup de grace pistol is a "multi cam" CZ 82 M&P 9mm Mak) ...
Image

Remember: these kind of camo or coloring effects are not "forever." They can be removed, modified and even restored to mil-spec BIW status, or even some other, whenever operational needs, environmental conditions or user preference dictate.

FWIW, I like what GanaEMT did with his MRP SBR.
