Omega_man's How To Pack a Pack
I was getting my gear together for an overnighter and figured, "Why not do a video How To about packing a pack?".
As a young Marine, when the ILBE was first issued our company gunny (former mountain survival instructor) gave a class on properly packing your gear. It's advice I still use and is, in my opinion, worthwhile.
Having your gear unbalanced and situated towards your body's center-of-gravity can make for a grueling hike. Also, having a set guideline and system in place facilitates that muscle memory and always knowing where your gear located.
So, here is my first attempt at a video tutorial. Hopefully, it's not too aweful to endure.
BTW: How the in the Hell do you embed the video?

here is a great infographic on what items should be packed where to properly distribute the weight.

Both Omega men in one thread? Both throwing down knowledge?
Two Omega men enter. One Omega man leaves.
Other than that, I have nothing to add because the vids are embedded but I haven't watched them.
Edit: Watched it. Awesome. Solid. To the point. Easy to watch and listen to. ZS:SC, FTW.

For those of us who are at work and have a firewall and an IT department that blocks YouTube/facebook and similar sites, if you upload them to photobucket.com or similar site, it would be greatly appreciated.omega_man wrote: BTW: How the in the Hell do you embed the video?

Stop talking you two! Any direct contact between Omega_Man and The Omega Man would be like crossing the streams. It would be bad. How bad? Thanks for the info omega. It seems like I pack my bag 100 different ways before I like how it feels.

Nice vids. When I went hiking with you I put all the heavy stuff on the bottom. That may be why the pack felt like it was swinging me around. So where do you put the Mason jar?

No, two Omega men should be ok. Now, if an Alpha_Man wanders in, we're all screwed.majorhavoc wrote:Stop talking you two! Re: Omega_man's How To Pack a Pack
I am always fighting the urge to put too many items in the top lid pockets. Too much weight higher up makes me less stable. Easy access to a FAK and water filter is a good idea. I also like to keep a headlamp in an easy to access place . Digging into a pack looking for it at dusk is just asking for gear to jump out and run away.
Tin foil hats not only keep the waves out but will confound most biting insects like black flies and gnats. Or maybe not.

Re: Omega_man's How To Pack a Pack

I watched before I read the comments, and when the camera panned up the first time and I saw your tin foil smurf hat I laughed really hard!
Great vid! I love my osprey kestrel 48 for hiking, and if I ever got into camping I'd probably grab the bigger one like yours! Fits me nicer than anything else I tried (and tried and tried). Totally jealous of your kifaru stuff, I keep drooling over their equipment on the website but all my money seems to be going down a different barrel!
Great presentation and your reasoning is sound for everything you showed. You made some good points on why you divide the items the way you do, and I'll likely try tweaking my hiking kit based on what I see here!

Re: Omega_man's How To Pack a Pack
awesome, kudos on making this video - it's so common for people to not really know the best way to pack things and end up having tons of issues a little ways down the road. I've seen a lot of guys get hurt or at least be really uncomfortable due to poor packing planning, so this is definitely worth taking the time to do right.
