South Eastern Ontario Day/Hiking Pack Ready for Improvement!

Postby bacpacjac » Sat Apr 07, 2012 9:10 pm

I promised a friend that I'd post a pic of my day/day hike pack and since I'm repacking tonight for a family hike tomorrow, here it is. It's almost EDC. I carry it when I'm more than a short walk back to my jeep, and also on day hikes. This is also the pack I carry on day outtings with my Scouts. It stays in the Jeep when I'm not carrying it, so in that sense, with me every day, and would use it as a GHB if I needed to.

I'm always looking for ways to improve it, so your suggestions are most welcomed!

*candle in pic has been removed
*there are two beaners on the outside of the pack, for hanging a nalgene and stuffsack/dump pouch (for foraged tinders/wild edibles, etc. And also for the treasures my 8 year old or little Scouts find along the trail.)

SMALL FRONT POCKET: CPR face mask and shield, 2 pairs nitrile gloves

FRONT POCKET: LED lightstick, LED headlamp, lanyard with FOX 40, squeeze LED, Gerber Clutch, ferro rod, Star Wars LED

MIDDLE POCKET: FAK (augmented AMK Field Trauma Kit) OTC meds, modular gadget/tool kit, Altoids tin tinder kit

Y'all helped me out when I bought a Condor Pocket Organizor a few weeks ago. After playing with it for a while, it's found a home in my Jeep. I've also been playing with a gifted bathroom/make-up bag that's been collecting dust. That one lives in my day hiking kit, that I edc when I'm more than a short walk to the Jeep. Neither is really a survival kit exactly, but a supplimentary kits that kind of wrangles a bunch of little things.

Thought I'd share a pic of both:

Other a bit more in the FAK department or a scarf (wool of course) looks pretty complete.

Thanks Tac Air.

I've debated adding a scarf of shemaugh. I keep bouncing between carrying too much and not enough. Winter's not quite finished with us here so wind, rain, snow and frost are all realistic to expect. An extra layer of warmth for my head, face and neck are a good idea. I carry a buff style-bandana but think I'll swap it out for the polar version, which has a built in fleece gator.

I'll post a pic and contents of the FAK when I get a chance. From memory, I added a couple of thin feminie pads, a couple of triangualr bandages, OTC meds (Advil, Tylenol, Gravol, Imodium, Benedryl), pen light, Purelle, couple of tampons, 1 person heat sheet, blistex, extra bandaids and prep pads. Everything's been packed up in ziplock bags to keep it water tight.

Thanks for the feedback!

It seems like Mother Nature has made up her mind that we're sticking with the summer weather so I've started switching over my edc/dayhiking/ghb kit to a summer set-up. There's still a big temperture range between the days and nights right now, anywhere from 10C - 39C in the last week or two, and we're still getting spring rain and T-storms, but it seems that we're past the cold and freezing weather but smack in the heart of perfect hypothermia weather.

Outgoing items include: Heavyweight warm clothes -extra wool socks -extra wool mitts and hat -wool blanket -chemical warmers -ax

Incoming items include: Change of lightweight clothes (with long sleeve and pants) -extra ankle socks -bug spray -sun screen -boonie hat -extra water bottles -mosquito netting -extra bandana

Here's a list of the current contents, as the bag sits right now. It's currently organized by the pockets I had in my old backpack. That pack bit the dust on a hike a couple of weeks ago and I'm still fiddling with it's replacement, trying to find the right home for everything. (This pack's bigger so it's easier to add a little of this and a little of that and ending up needing a frieght train to carry it all. As much as anything, this is where this chromic over-packer needs your help!)

-FOX 40, squeeze LED, Gerber Clutch, ferro rod, mini bic
