Zombie Squad master ZTF list

Since we're all zombie movie fanatics here it's our responsibility as the Zombie Squad to share our findings with the public to help them find the jewels out they're missing out on and warn them of the atrocities they should avoid at all costs.

This task has been discussed a few times but we never got around to it. We can set aside some webspace to host a listing of every Zombie movie we can think of and over time we can rate them, give them a quick review and maby steal the movie rating as seen on the somethingawful.com movie rates of what Mugwug does on Moral-flexibility.net. If you haven't check out the reviews on Mugwugs site you're missing out.


One thing I would like to add to each review is a listing of "lessons learned" like what Cool as a Chicken is talking about in the thread: Lessons Learned From Zombie Films

Anyone interested? If so we should start with a good list first. There is a list that's really out of date that I snagged from another website here:

It's very incomplete and a lot of them are questionable as actual zombie movies.

This brings an interesting point up, how do we define "zombie movies"? I just recently picked up a copy of The zombie movie encyclopedia and "Weekend at Bernies II" is in there (technically Bernie acts like a zombie, but damned if my zombie movie collection is going to share space with that film).

Do we want to apply a hardline definition, or include any movie that captures the spirit of the zombocalypse?

You bring up a good point in Bernie's.
Columbia Press says "the zombi [sic] is used by its master to perform heavy manual labor and to implement evil schemes."
And in general fiction and film, a zombie's basic drive is for flesh. Bernie doesn't have that.
There's got to be some malice in a zombie, so Bernie is out.

Crap, that definition excludes most of my favorites (as we've moved to the "mindless flesh-eating automaton" zombie in most popular examples). But we're building the list, we can set our own terms as to what constitutes a "zombie movie".

House by the cemetary is a good example of a zombie film that doesn't really count as a zombie film in my books. You have a single zombie (sorta) who has expanded his own lifespan by feeding on the living, which sounds more vampiric than zombielike.

Someone from both camps would be ideal, but just one opinion would be great, by worth I mean, wide selection for the price, and zombie movies like a muthafooker

Don't get me wrong, I liked the encyclopedia, especially when you take into consideration the author was attempting to show the evolution of zombies in cinema. I don't regret spending the $14 at all.

He is, however, the first to make the admission that several of the entries should not have made the cut.

I guess this is our dilema, do we want an exhaustive list, or just a true zombie movie list? Or both?

If we aim for a comprehensive zombie movie list, we have to go back to the early voodoo zombie films from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It may easier just to do this on a case by case basis, maybe incorporating voting into the inclusion process.

Yeah, Netflix is totally worth it. They have most of the movies listed above, but the zombie subsection (of Horror) is not very well thought out. I mean who here considers Freddy and Jason to be zombies?

I think the definition needs to be broader than "dead or undead people who like to consume human flesh". Maybe we could set out a list of rules that would encompass all types of zombies, i.e.:

A zombie film features animated corpses or persons trapped between life and death who have any/all the following characteristics:
a. crave human flesh or brains
b. lack human consciousness
c. moan incessantly
d. controlled by a third party through drugs for evil purpose
e. have no pulse

Perhaps classifying them by zombie type Voodoo, contemporary and steroid (smart/fast) zombie might be an idea (not that I think this would be less problematic).

So maybe we need a chart at the end like in your reviews giving different stats. A lot will have to be "unknown".

I agree. I was thinking of just slappign voodoo under "metaphysical" but maybe your right. We could break that down more.

There may be some with cross over like a few Fulci films (or what I liek to call "what the fuck?" films) will have both Toxins and Metaphysical sources of zombies. We'll just have to list all the possibites. What other Characterists are there of Zombie films?

I have heard of some Italian horror movies that are so horrible that most people can't sit through the entire thing. One movie Canibal Halocaust is banned in several countries and was openly opposed by the pope. Also I have heard "I Spit on Your Grave" is good. However, the person who told me about them said that in some of these movies there is killing of animals on screen, so beware if you are squimish.

I think we need to come up with a definition of what a "zombie" is.

Anyone have a good one that will help us narrow down our selection? We need a better guideline so we don't end up with Friday the 13th on our list.
