Ok, I watched the premier of the new series last night with my wife...
I also watched the original way back when, but wasn't really able to examine it critically at the time.
So, last night, watching the premiere, several things jumped out me...
1.) They refer to themselves, in English, as the Visitors... Ok, ignoring the fact that they speak English (and every other language on the planet), the closest thing that they can translate the name of their culture to is 'Visitors'? It's almost as if they're TRYING to make us think they're just here for a visit, then leaving, just like they announced they were. So, every time you talk about them, it reinforces the fact that they're only here briefly.
2.) They can cure 65 diseases completely, because they've already done it. And they want to give us these treatments. Ok, if they are humans, I might be able to buy this, assuming you're not talking about diseases which are caused by environmental vectors (virii, bacterium, etc). If they ARE human, then somebody's got some 'splaining to do.
3.) You've got 39 ships hovering over major metropolitan centers, and, oh, they're sorry they didn't mean to frighten us... First, those ships aren't all that big... Yeah, they're flying over the cities, but they LOOK like they're roughly the size of an aircraft carrier each. And there's a lot of open space inside of them. So, where exactly are they going to store whatever it is they needed to come across light years to get. And notice we still have no explanation of what happened to those fighters? Something took them out.
So, at the end of a month, I'm noticing embassies going in, a bunch of giveaways, some kind of ambassador program with snazzy threads... And, I'm not trusting a bit of it.
I'm not going to be setting up any resistance cells or anything (nor joining any), and I'm not going to say a word about my concerns to any co-workers, but I am going to be continuing my preps (cash only at this point for certain things), avoiding certain sections of the net from home, because I'm betting their IT is far better than ours and until I do trust them, which is going to be a while, I'm going to be concerned...
History is littered with the results of what happens when a more technologically advanced society comes into contact with a less advanced one.
Anybody else catch anything? And what would you be doing at this point in that verse?
Anyway, not a bad setup episode... I'll keep watching.
