Mosin Jungle Carbine mod

Post by HellSpork » Wed Aug 29, 2012 8:58 pm

Been hemming and hawing, but finally bit the bullet and decided to shorten my 91/30 Mosin Nagant.
I have another, nicer one, that'll be kept in original condition.

Anyway, I was inspired by a thread over on Arfcom where I found out that a reproduction muzzle for an Enfield Jungle Carbine .303 rifle (I believe it's specifically made for converting non-carbine SMLE's) fit's PERFECTLY on a 91/30 barrel cut down to 16.25" from closed-boltface.

I did just that. Cut with a heavy-duty tubing cutter at exactly 16.25". Then had to lightly grind the exterior diameter of the muzzle, since the tubing cutter caused it to flare a bit. I recrowned it with a spherical grinding bit in a slow drill.

Tapped on the muzzle, nice and snug. Drilled, pinned, and set the front sight blade.

Then came the HARD part... The stock had to be shortened, then free-handed on the bench-grinder to get the nosecap to fit. In fact, I have to do this part over again because it's too close to the bayonet lug for a bayonet to attach properly.

Now, all I need is a repro Jungle Carbine bayonet. Originals are going for a MINT...

Edited to add: This is going to be a dedicated trunk rifle. I have a buttstock cheekrest/ammo-pouch thing on the way. Then I just have to double-check the sights with a bore-laser.

Pics!

Well done sir. I would have however used lapping compound with the grinder or used the brass bit method for the recrowning.

It's a Mosin. A river stone with spit would put an adequate crown on it.

:clownshoes:

How far off is the front sight now in terms of elevation?

Thanks for the kind words, guys! It was a lot of fun to do, and a pretty simple project for those who want an interesting, hard-hitting rifle on the cheap!

mystic_1 wrote:Neat! Have you fired it yet?
Nope. Hoping to find a decent place to shoot, but that's been hard since I moved to the middle of effing nowhere (but apparently not nowhere enough that there's places to shoot...).
Dawgboy wrote:That's sweet. What is the total length after the bob job?
Total length is 38.25". Still got plenty of heft, so recoil won't be an issue, but she's much handier now.
ArmchairRacer wrote:That's really sweet, where did you get the muzzle?
Numrich gun parts.
This part, exactly:

Not entirely sure, yet. I need to borrow a laser bore-sighter. May have to file down the front sight blade a bit.

Huh. Maybe I'm become less of a purist in my old age, or maybe it's just the giant smileboner that shooting JT Nieman's obrez gave me, but I like this. Nice work.

Nice job, really interesting and original variant considering all that has been done to MN's over the years.

We still need a range report on this rifle. And pics of the muzzle flash (evening/night would be awesome)!

Edit: I just looked up the barrel length on my sons' M44 carbines. They are about 20" and have a great muzzle flash. Your 16.25" bobbed rifle will be a real kick to shoot, not just to your shoulder either.

Still haven't had a chance to fire it. :vmad:

Hoping to get a chance this week. Though probably won't get any action or fireball shots.
