Unholy matrimony: the Doubled-Barrelled AR-15

Postby majorhavoc » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:29 pm

Searched for a prior post on this and didn't find anything. If I missed it, I just hope I'm not embarrassingly late to the party, like the guy who started that fifteenth duplicate thread about the double barrelled 1911.

Don't know whether to laugh or cry about this one, but the engineering challenges behind the gas system alone do get my grudging admiration.

What's better than one barrel?

TWO BARREL!

What's better than two barrel?

FIVE BARREL!

RG just threw this up on the chat thread. I subsequently threw up in my mouth.

Unholy matramony: the Doubled-Barrelled AR-15

Postby Texas19Delta » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:50 pm

From the website "With one pull of the trigger, two bullets are fired an inch apart from each other".
So, the purpose is to get two 5.56 bullets on target. Let's see - a 5.56 bullet at 62 grains (XM855) times two rounds is 124 grains on target.
Seems like an overly complicated way to get 124 grains on target.
If only someone would invent a simple, reliable weapon system that got 124 grains on target with a single trigger pull.
Oh, wait a second, if I remember right, doesn't an AK chambered in 7.62x39 shoot a 124 grain bullet? And isn't the AK considered a simple, reliable weapon system?
Seems to me this double barrel AR a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I am just that fool.

As a range toy, can you possible think of a better one? As an improvement to the regular AR? No. Toy? Yes.

I wonder if these are actually going to make it to market or not.

The more I look at the pictures of this, the more I think that left barrel is higher than the right barrel by enough of a margin to totally screw accuracy. Anyone else?

You're way over-thinking this one, flsger. If that bothers you, why not ponder why this picture shows twin lasers (Frickin' Lasers! - sorry, I am taking medication for that). I mean twin lasers on a double barrelled weapon makes exactly - and I mean EXACTLY - as much sense as twin lasers on a single barrelled weapon. What is the operator trying to do? Aim for two spots at once?

Face it, applying logic to evaluate this product is about as fruitful as doing a literary analysis of the ingredients list on a package of Doritos.

Wonder if it has an adjustment screw so you can change where the trajectories meet (like some of the cheaper double-rifles)?

I wonder if the sear releases are slightly off so that they don't fire exactly at the same time (what if your shooting premium ammo that's consistant enough for the boolitz to side-swipe each other just before they get to your target)?

What if you get a failure to extract on one side and a bolt over ride on the other, at the same time (how long is that going to take to clear)?

Will you void the warranty if you shoot steel?

....head hurts now.

This is to nullify spin drift - the lower left barrel is lower so that the point of impact is the same.
Wait - that would only work if the barrels had different twist rates.
So confusing.

Bingo. We have a winner.

According to ATF if it fires more than one round per trigger pull that's what it is.

Still looks fun though. Can you imagine what a conversation starter that would be.

Only ONE scope?
C'mon, surely this great innovation requires some kind of two eyed bi-scope-nocular.
