Re: Adventures in rice, beans and bulk dry milk storage
@Firefly58 You are correct, Brown rice is not a good LTS item. White rice, fortified white rice is a solid choice LTS storage item. Properly stored rice should be good for 30 years. Properly = Sealed in mylar, O2 scrubber and in a cool, dry place - as described int he OP. here is a link to nutrition...

"I think a lot of people have no clue what a real war is like. A little 1913 if you ask me."
quite for truth. However, a very large number of people do know exactly how hard it sucks to be in a war... Hopefully - they will be able to pass on some of this 'Corporate knowledge' to the clueless...

If I may - re"muddy intel" I would note that all intel i provided or self-gathered. is at best, muddy. .I also note that all rioting is local. That is to say, if folks managed to burn down all of Kenosha - the impact outside of the area could be minimal. Note - Could Be , Knowing where you supply ch...

Re: The Coming Civil War - (Warning: No Politics)
@SCBrian Are these so-called 'web reporters' any worse than the overpaid talking heads seen on the TeeVee? Everyone in the media (big or litle) seems to have an agenda, open or hidden. The "news" is no longer fair or balanced, or in some cases, even the truth of a thing - thus continues the Balkaniz...

Re: Preps for a Contested Election in November
I think what will, or will not, happen in the post-election period will be entirely media driven. I no longer watch the TeeVee, getting my news/information from an aggregator site, Its a mosaic of stories across the Nation and requires some thought to sort out what it means for me here in the Frozen...

Well... With interest rates taking a dive, and with my and my wife's careers looking up, it was time to be an adult and stop renting. We bought a house. Pretty standard affair for Alaska "suburbs". Clean well water, new septic, little over an acre, big garage, 2 sheds, ranch home. (SNIP) Biggest th...

@IAmOne I feel your pain friend. We get screwed all the time on postage here in AK. I have to image that someone locally carries Maxpidition gear around your A/O. If you have to go .mil surplus, you could have a decent bag for less that the cost of postage. But, it would be a really ugly colour :mrg...

Re: Long time wannabe from Las Vegas.
Are there really whole tribes of people in the sewers? Yes. Actually, under the streets in the 'flood control' tunnels. There are many YT vids on this 'lifestyle'. Drugs, alcohol and a gambling addition go a long way to explain much in the way of the Troglodyte community. I lived in Las Vegas for o...

I live in Alaska because it is about as far away from the US as you can get and still be in a State where you can ride a bicycle to Austin - NV or TX.

Just remember to cut the power back. Digi mode are 100% duty cycle, something your Icom wasn't built to handle at full power.
I'd suggest starting with PSK31 - then head for the Ft8 jungle once you get your rig/ant dialed in...

Re: What if Google went down for a week or two
The loss of Google would matter - for a while. Something else would come along to replace it, just like AltaVista or Ask Jeeves. Having a paper list of email addresses is something that should have been done a long time ago. I don't save anything via the Google. We also keep a running IP listing of ...

We've been 'topping up' LTS supplies since the first windfall. Make no mistake, 'fireworks' can be very dangerous by themselves.
Throwing a 'canister' type mortar firework can cause a lot of damage.

Re: Organized Looting Gangs Becoming More Brazen in U.S. Cities
Sounds like the '92 kerfuffle in LA. Back then, Gangs looted liquor stores. Caravans of vans & SUV would roll up and empty the stores in minutes. ( I guess in Chiraq, they have upped their game. This is no time to be living in or around a "major urban area; in the US. In Minneapolis, business are le...

Learning form an others loss is smart. The folks in Lebanon missed the lesson of China Port of Tianji/ 2015 Big smoking hole there as well. 11,300 tons of "Industrial' chemicals as well. @ dabster In a basic sense, both radio are (mostly) made in China and put out 5 watts of RF. That it where it ends. The Bofangs run VHF (100+ Mhz) and UHF (400+ Mhz) Line of sight. Period . Yes, if you are on a mountain and someone else is on a mountain..lots of range. Or using a repeater on a mount...
