Re: fitness training on a budget

Depending on your AO check out F3 nation. It's a free men's workout group in a lot of cities. Most of the workouts are early morning and boot camp style. Been doing it for about 1.5 years and it's great. Good way to meet fellows in your area as well. Ready made group to do Goruck events, OCR, etc. T...

Re: Turning a briefcase into a suspender pack

That's pretty neat. Been rethinking my edc/work bag lately. Use a Goruck Echo bag, but been interested in going back to shoulder/messanger bag. Though the poorer weight distribution has been holding me back. Can details on how you did the connection/straps?

Re: Mrs. Woodsghost's Get Home Bag

Looks great and commend you in keeping it simple. If making a kit for another person, especially someone not as into as prepping, less stuff and more simple/intuitive is key. One thing I might do is switch out the bracelet for a bundle of Paracord. I assume you have that there to go with the tarp fo...

Re: AT Thru hike Gear

First sorry for the long post, coffee kicked in and meetings haven't started. Congrats on the future thru hike. I did about 2 months in 2002 (Springer Mountain GA to Rockfish Gap VA - start of the SNP). It was June and July, so we started behind the Thru hikers, but did catch up to a couple slow pok...

Re: WWYD if there was an election?

In this alternative universe I have a work trip to DC this week. So the avoidance portion of my prep is mostly out the window. Though I don't realistically think there will be any major events here or anywhere.. But I did drive instead of fly. Brought my bag of freeze-dried backpacking meals and sto...

Re: 2016 Storms-Hurricane Matthew Attention FL,GA, SC,NC!

Right outside Chapel Hill, NC lost power for about 4 hours and had a ton of rain and flash flood warnings. Wind is picking up over night, but will be clear by tomorrow. We're about 2.5hour drive from Wilmington, NC.

How's everyone else making it?

Re: what's going on in Charoltte?

Second night of riots, national guard going in. Was planning on taking a hunter Ed class last night at the bass pro outside Charlotte, but between riots, gas shortage and thunderstorms I felt it was best to find another date was best. Plus 2 hour drive didn't sound fun. Best defense is to avoid the ...

Re: Why East Coast gas prices are about to explode

Live in Chapel Hill. Just filled up. 3 of the 5 gas stations near me are out. Another one might have been, but didn't check it. Got gas, but it was about 20 cents more than last week. Glad I have that extra five gallon gas can already filled up for my mower (which would last my little push mower abo...

Re: Vehicle Kit, what do you put it in?

Here's a quick photo of the storage area. Nothing special, but got most of the basics covered here. The whole deal lifts out where the spare tire, fix a flat, and tools are. Will look for a smaller air compressor too. And shut switched out the traditional road flares for some led 'flares'. http://up...

Re: Vehicle Kit, what do you put it in?

Wanted to thank everyone again for all the advice. Now that we have the new (to us) car, I got it mostly figured out. We got a 2014 Subaru Outback. So far loving the car. As for the vehicle kit, the majority of the it is stored in the spare tire (doughnut style) compartment and is accessed via the t...

Re: Ammo, lead & pregnancy

Just some random thoughts. Have a almost three year old and another on the way. Don't think the lead in the bullets at the house are an issue. Unless the kid will be chewing on it. :) For pregnant women you have to be concerned with the lead dust at ranges, so indoor ranges would be worse, even with...

Echo, thanks for sharing the kit. I had a longer reply, but the browser crashed before I could submit. Here are the high points of what I learned from doing a 23 mile ruck/hike two weeks ago along a rural to urban paved trail with about 20 other dudes. It was hot and humid here in NC. It took us 6.5...

Thanks for the continued info. Life git busy so haven't committed to anything yet. I did finish the cabinets where the modem sits, so I should get something soon.

Mostly I'm just happy that Twizzler brought Ogre to the party.

Re: Zippers R Stickin'

The folks over at GORUCK recommend McNetts zipper lube. Their rucks go through the ringer, so I figure they know what they are talking about. Of course if you already got the wax, might as well try that first. And that is a great looking pack. Always good to see old gear get some love. http://www.go...

Hey Stercutus, as someone from Montgomery, I'd normally agree that it isn't the coolest place. But there are plenty of dumpy parts still. Were you station at Maxwell? Amazingly enough, the last couple years things have really turned around (at least for a small Southern city). The Old Cloverdale nei...

I'd check out Nashville if that was possible. It would be an easy sale for non-history folks. Lots to see and do. Just moved from there a few months ago, so if you need any tips, just PM me. There are also plenty of Civil War history there and in the outlying areas. If you are going to New Orleans, ...

emclean, thanks for the info on APC UPS. I'll take a look at those. B&Q, agreed on using the phone and laptop. That's what I did yesterday. However, I wanted something that I wouldn't have to turn on if I was in the middle of a conference call (which happened yesterday). Also, wanted to try and limi...

Re: What Did You Do Today To Prepare?

Not today, but last Wednesday I got PRK laser eye surgery to correct my super nearsightedness (-7.50 contacts). Six days in and its already pretty great. No longer have to stash contacts and glasses in the cars and bags for just in case. Recovery hasn't been super fun, but it will be worth it. Tomor...

Raptor and teotwaki thanks for the info. Will see about how much power my stuff draws.

Also my spidey senses must have kicked in when i wrote this. We just lost power not 2 minutes ago. Ill take that as a sign.
