Picked up my yearly supply of free range, grass fed, hormone/antibiotic free beef: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4381/35777532674_f8bb5da4a0_c.jpg This is my 5th year going with the same farmer. This year's yield: 418 lbs hanging weight translated to 257 lbs of meat @ $4.80 a pound. I can't even fin...

Re: Watches for long-term survival off the grid

Thank you. Quartz will do, want something light weight, not a big fan of luminox, any other brands you can recommend? Traser, to start with. Then look at this list of companies using tritium tubes about 1/4 of the way down the page. I would only look at brands using tubes from MB Microtec given the...

Tried playing Fallout when the last one came out. Didn't really get into it.

Been reading some stuff that looks like would be fun this time around.

Broke down and bought. Downloading from Steam now.

Re: Long-term stock market investment

I go 50% 500 Index fund, 25% Bond Index fund, and 25% International Index fund. Furthermore, you should pay attention to the fees associated with funds. It can cost you 10's of thousands of dollars in the long run. Also, if you have an HSA look into that as an investment vehicle. Tax free investment...

Don't have the time right now to scan the whole thread. Look for documentaries on Hurricane Katrina. My wife and I happened to watch one on 60 mins about what medical personnel e.g. hospitals went through the days following. Also showed a lot of the local populace. She was on the fence about me bein...

Re: Finally Did It!

That's a pretty nice looking place you've got. Thank you! It's so much better out here. More work, but well worth it. How deep is your pond? This one is only a few feet. The one in the back is much bigger and deeper. I think 6 feet at its deepest. I have some Koi in the back. Haven't seen them late...

Re: Finally Did It!

Thought I would update this thread. My garden has been going nuts. I water every day or so and pull weeds. I get this almost daily now that it's going full tilt. Often times I have too many cucumbers so I take them into work: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/19737257029_3beb138456.jpg The front p...

Re: Maui

You should really take a drive up Haleakala and catch a sunrise! Took my wife to Maui when I went home to visit. We spent a week there. She loved it. Might like the Lavender farm and winery that's near there. Might want to have dinner/lunch at Mama's Fish House. You can get local food and try poi! T...

Re: Finally Did It!

We were supposed to move in mid February, but my parents are closing earlier on their new house, so we are moving in at the end of Jan. Wish we could skip winter this year because all I want to do is start planting some food and tend to some chickens. Just because it is winter doesn't mean you can'...

Re: My best prep purchase so far, chickens!

And if you really want to keep down bugs, don't rely on chickens. If you can tolerate the noise, guinea fowl are far better. Chickens will eat mostly feed and just pick at bugs when bored. You can force them to eat bugs by cutting back on their feed - but they will respond by laying fewer eggs. Gui...

Re: Finally Did It!

This. Oh, so very much - this. I love being able to turn my kids loose in the 'yard', with my biggest worry being that they will come back covered in mud or muck. Or that they just found one of the farm cats has a litter of kittens which they have already adopted and named... Ok, or that they found...

Just being nosey, but is it Western MD, Northern MD or is it across the Chesapeake on the Delmarva peninsula? None of those! It's in Southern Maryland. Valley Lee area. Lots of water around me (no beaches). The area has a lot of history. Lots of families have been in the area for ages. Lots of amis...

Re: My best prep purchase so far, chickens!

Just bought a house with some land that will finally allow me to get some chickens. Plan on starting with a couple and see how it goes. Luckily I have a good network down here that I can draw from. In my experience 3 or 4 chickens is pretty much the same amount of work as 5 or 6 chickens; it all de...

Congratulations! Is it in Maryland or Georgia? It's in Maryland. I currently live in a house in the city. My wife and I are going to try and rent it out for a few years before selling it. Finally Did It!

After dreaming for a few years my wife and I were finally able to buy our SHTF home. My parent's decided to move to Savannah Georgia. They have a beautiful house that they've built up and I didn't want them to get rid of it. So, I decided to buy it myself. About 10 years ago my parent's bought a fix...
